Jaimini: Atmakaraka and karakamsha

Ishta Devta Calculator

In Jaimini astrology your ishta devta is read from the 12th sign from your karakamsha, the navamsa sign of your Atmakaraka: the planet there points to the deity, the Sun to Shiva or Venus to Lakshmi. Enter your birth details to see your Atmakaraka, karakamsha, that sign and both deity lists.

Date, exact time and place. The check runs on the server from these values and nothing is stored.

A Lagna changes about every two hours, so the house numbers below depend on the time. If the recorded time is approximate, read the houses as approximate too.

Your details are used to compute this result and are not saved. They are sent in the body of the request, never in the page address, and the page worked out from them is never cached or indexed, so nobody else receives your chart.

How the Ishta Devta Calculator Works

  • Atmakaraka. The seven classical planets are ranked by their degree within their own sign; the highest is the Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul (the seven-karaka scheme the site uses everywhere).
  • Karakamsha. The Atmakaraka's navamsa (D9) sign, each sign divided into nine parts of 3°20′.
  • The 12th from it. Counting the karakamsha as the first sign, the 12th sign is the house of moksha and letting go, where Jaimini looks for the deity a person turns to.
  • The planet there. The planets in that sign in the navamsa point to the deity. When it is empty, the sign's lord is used, and the planets aspecting it are listed as the other school's answer.
  • The guide Ishta devta from your kundli walks through the same steps by hand.

Planet to Deity: the Jaimini and Parashara Lists

Most teachers use the list read from the Jaimini Sutras' verses on the 12th from the karakamsha. A second list, from the chapter on the incarnations in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, links each graha with an avatar of Vishnu, and some families prefer it. Both are shown for every result.

Later traditions give other forms for the same planets — Hanuman for Mars, Krishna for Venus — usually following a family's own devotional background. They are not errors, and this calculator does not choose between them.

Where Ishta Devta Methods Differ

  • Navamsa or birth chart. Many read the 12th from the karakamsha in the navamsa (used here); others find the karakamsha sign in the birth chart and read the 12th from it there. The result lists the planets for both.
  • An empty sign. The lord of the sign, the planets aspecting it, or the stronger of these: there is no single agreed rule, and the result shows each.
  • Seven or eight karakas. The eight-karaka scheme admits Rahu, ranked on its reverse degree. When that changes your Atmakaraka, the result says so and gives that branch too.
  • Birth time. A navamsa sign spans only 3°20′, so a few minutes can move a planet into the next sign. The result flags a close call between the top two karakas.

What the Ishta Devta Reading Does Not Mean

It is not your kul devta, the family deity handed down through a lineage, and it does not tell you to stop worshipping a form you already love. It is one traditional pointer for personal devotion. Nothing needs to be bought: a lamp, a name repeated with attention and a regular time are enough.

Ishta Devta Calculator FAQ

How do I find my ishta devta from my kundli?

Find your Atmakaraka, then its navamsa sign (the karakamsha), then count to the 12th sign from it. The planet there points to the deity. Enter your birth details above and the calculator shows each step.

Which deity does each planet point to?

In the Jaimini list: the Sun to Shiva, the Moon to Gauri, Mars to Skanda, Mercury and Saturn to Vishnu, Jupiter to Shiva with Parvati, Venus to Lakshmi, Rahu to Durga and Ketu to Ganesha. The BPHS list gives an avatar of Vishnu for each.

What if the 12th sign from the karakamsha is empty?

Schools differ. The usual reading takes the sign's lord; others take the planets aspecting the sign by Jaimini's sign aspects. The calculator shows both.

Is ishta devta the same as kul devta?

No. The kul devta is the family deity handed down through a lineage. The ishta devta is the form you personally feel drawn to, which may or may not be the same.

Why does my ishta devta differ between websites?

Usually because of the karaka scheme (seven or eight), the chart used (navamsa or birth chart), the deity list (Jaimini or the Vishnu avatars) or the birth time. This calculator states each choice and shows the variants.

Does the birth time matter for the ishta devta?

Yes. A navamsa sign spans 3°20′, so a few minutes can change the karakamsha or the planets around it. The calculator flags it when the top two karakas are within a degree.
