Two systems
Lunar and solar month systems in the four regional calendars
These four calendars do not share a month system, and this index exists partly to say so. Telugu and Kannada months are lunar: a month runs from one new moon to the next and is named for the sidereal sign the Sun occupies at the new moon that opens it, in the amanta reckoning used across the South. A lunation containing no sankranti is an adhika (extra) month and is labelled as one.
Tamil and Malayalam months are solar: a month lasts as long as the Sun spends in one sidereal sign, 29 to 32 days, with no paksha and no adhika month. They differ from each other twice over. The Tamil year opens at the Mesha ingress in mid-April and the Malayalam year at the Simha ingress in mid-August; and the rule mapping a sankranti's instant onto a civil day is the sunset rule in Tamil Nadu and the aparahna rule in Kerala. Makara Sankranti 2026 falls at 15:07, which is before sunset at Chennai and after aparahna at Kochi — so Thai 1 is 14 January and Makaram 1 is 15 January. Both calendars are right; they are answering different questions.
Tithi and nakshatra are the same for all four on any given day, because those are astronomy rather than convention. What differs is the name each calendar gives the month that day falls in.
Questions
Regional calendars · common questions
Which regional calendars are published here?
Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, for 2026 and 2027 — a page per month and a hub per year, 104 pages in all.
Do these four calendars use the same months?
No, and that is the point of publishing them separately. Telugu and Kannada months are lunar and amanta (Chaitra to Phalguna, new moon to new moon). Tamil months are solar (Chithirai to Panguni, one sidereal sign each) and Malayalam months are solar too but start at a different sign (Chingam to Karkidakam) and use a different day-boundary rule. Applying one system to all four would be wrong on about half the days for two of them.
Which city are the timings for?
Hyderabad for Telugu, Chennai for Tamil, Bengaluru for Kannada and Kochi for Malayalam. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names and it differs across India by well over an hour, so each calendar states its own city rather than borrowing one.
Is there a PDF download for these calendars?
There is no PDF download on this page. Every date is computed when the page is requested rather than exported once, so a downloadable file would start going stale the moment it was written. The tables print cleanly from a browser.
