Planetary Hora: the seven hours and what each is for
Every hour of the day is ruled by one of seven planets. The first hora of a day belongs to that day's own planet, and the rest follow a fixed order. Pick a planet below for today's timings in your city.
The seven horas and what each is traditionally used for
One row per planet. The use is traditional guidance, not a rule, and the timings differ by city because a hora is measured from local sunrise rather than from the clock.
| Planet | Traditionally used for |
|---|---|
| Surya Hora | Authority, visibility and anything that needs a decision from someone senior: applications to government offices, a meeting with a superior, taking a public position, or the first appearance of a piece of work. Traditionally read as poor for negotiation, because it does not bend. |
| Chandra Hora | Home, family and the mind: moving into a house, a conversation that needs someone to feel heard, travel with family, and rest. It is the hora most often chosen for anything to do with the mother, water, or a fresh emotional start. |
| Mangal Hora | Physical work and decisive action: exercise, construction, moving heavy things, a confrontation that has to happen, or the point in a project where somebody has to simply start. Sharp rather than inauspicious — it is read as poor for signing and for anything that needs patience. |
| Budh Hora | Study, writing, contracts and trade: sending the proposal, sitting the exam, learning something new, bookkeeping, and any conversation whose outcome is a document. The classical default for beginning a business transaction. |
| Guru Hora | Teaching, advice, wealth planning and spiritual work: meeting a teacher or an advisor, beginning a course of study, a puja, charity, and decisions about money that are meant to last. The most broadly auspicious of the seven. |
| Shukra Hora | Relationships, comfort, art and appearance: engagement and marriage talks, buying clothes or jewellery, decorating, music and design, and anything meant to be enjoyed rather than endured. This is the hora most asked for by name — "shukra hora timings today" is typed 4,400 times a month in India. |
| Shani Hora | Discipline, repairs and long duties: maintenance, clearing a backlog, work with iron, land or labour, and anything that is meant to be slow and to hold. Read as restrictive rather than bad — it is a poor hora to begin a celebration and a good one to begin a habit. |
The seven planetary horas
Rahu and Ketu never rule a hora, which is why there are seven of these pages and not nine.
How hora timings are calculated
Sunrise and sunset come from the Swiss Ephemeris for the selected city and today's date. Daylight is divided into twelve equal parts and the night into twelve more. The first hora of the day belongs to the lord of the weekday, and the lords then run Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and round again — the Chaldean order, which is also where the names of the days of the week come from.
