Mulank calculator: how to calculate your Mulank

Mulank, the birth number or root number, is the simplest calculation in Indian numerology: take the day of the month you were born on and reduce it to a single digit. The month and year play no part. This page shows the addition and gives the Mulank for every date from 1 to 31.

  • Only the date is used. No name, no birth time, no birth place, and nothing is saved.
  • This is a traditional interpretive framework, not a prediction and not medical, legal or financial advice.

Only the date is used. No name, no birth time, no birth place, and nothing is saved.

How to calculate Mulank

  1. Take the day of the month only. Ignore the month and the year entirely.
  2. If that day is 10 or more, add its digits together.
  3. Repeat until one digit from 1 to 9 is left. That single digit is the Mulank.
  4. Mulank never keeps a master number, because a day of the month can only be 1 to 31.

Mulank chart for dates 1 to 31

Every date from 1 to 31 with its Mulank and ruling planet. The pattern repeats every nine days, which is why the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th share a Mulank and a planet. Each row here is calculated when the page is served rather than copied from a list, so the chart and the calculator above can never disagree.

Difference between Mulank and Bhagyank

The two numbers are confused constantly, and the confusion is understandable: both come from a birth date, both end in a small number, and plenty of sites print one and label it the other. They are not interchangeable. Mulank is a statement about a day and is shared by everyone born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd of any month in any year. Bhagyank is a statement about a whole date and separates those same people immediately.

Ruling planet for every Mulank and Bhagyank 1 to 9

The planet column is the whole of Vedic numerology in one table. Every reading on this site traces back to it: a Mulank 8 is read through Saturn, a Bhagyank 3 through Jupiter, and the lucky days and colours in the last two columns are the ones traditionally assigned to that graha rather than to the number itself.

Common mistakes in Mulank and Bhagyank calculation

  • Using the month and year for Mulank. Mulank is the day of birth alone. A person born on 23 May 1990 and a person born on 23 November 2004 have the same Mulank, 5, and completely different Bhagyanks.
  • Writing the year as two digits. A Bhagyank taken from 90 instead of 1990 loses the 1 and the 9 and produces a different number. The full four-digit year is required.
  • Reducing 11, 22 or 33 in the Bhagyank. Those three are kept as they are in this tradition. A Bhagyank of 11 is not a Bhagyank of 2, although its root is 2 and both readings are given below.
  • Adding the Mulank and the Bhagyank together to get a third number. They are two separate readings of the same date, not two halves of a sum. Adding them produces a figure the tradition has no interpretation for.
  • Using the date the birth was registered instead of the date it happened. Certificates are sometimes issued days later, and the Bhagyank changes with the day.
  • Applying the Hindu calendar date. Mulank and Bhagyank are calculated from the Gregorian date, the one printed on the certificate. Tithi belongs to the panchang, which is a different calculation on a different page.
  • Assuming a birth after midnight belongs to the previous day. For these two numbers the calendar date is used exactly as written; the day-boundary question belongs to the birth chart, not to the arithmetic.

Mulank and Bhagyank compatibility table

Compatibility in this tradition is a statement about two numbers, not about two people, and it is used for a Mulank-to-Mulank comparison rather than a Mulank-to-Bhagyank one. Five is friendly to all nine and hostile to none. Eight has the largest difficult set. Nobody should end or refuse a relationship over this table, and any practitioner who tells you to has stopped practising numerology and started practising something else.

Mulank and Bhagyank combination

The two numbers are read together as often as they are read apart, and the reading is simpler than most sites make it. When the Mulank and the Bhagyank are the same, the tradition calls it a concentrated chart: the temperament and the circumstances point the same way, which makes a person unusually consistent and unusually one-note. When they are friendly numbers, the temperament finds the circumstances workable — a Mulank 3 with a Bhagyank 5 spends its life in situations that reward talking and moving, which is what it wanted to do anyway. When they are listed as difficult, the reading is not misfortune but friction: a Mulank 1 with a Bhagyank 8 keeps being handed slow, procedural, long-horizon work by a temperament that wants to decide today. Nothing in that combination predicts failure. It predicts a particular kind of tiredness, and the traditional advice is to build the missing pace into the method rather than to fight the number.

Vedic numerology behind Mulank and Bhagyank

Indian numerology is a planetary system before it is an arithmetic one. The nine single digits are matched to the nine grahas — 1 to the Sun, 2 to the Moon, 3 to Jupiter, 4 to Rahu, 5 to Mercury, 6 to Venus, 7 to Ketu, 8 to Saturn, 9 to Mars — and once that map is fixed, a number inherits everything the tradition already says about its planet. That is the whole mechanism. When a Mulank 8 page talks about delay, endurance and results that arrive late, it is not making a claim about the digit 8; it is repeating what Jyotisha says about Saturn, applied through the map.

This is why Vedic numerology and the two Western systems disagree so often, and why the disagreement is not a mistake by either side. Chaldean and Pythagorean numerology are letter systems: they convert a name into a number and read the number as a quality. Vedic numerology is primarily a date system, and it reads the number as a planet. A name has no planet, so the systems are answering different questions with the same nine digits. Both are on this site, on separate pages, precisely so that neither has to pretend to be the other.

The reduction rule itself — keep adding digits until one is left — is old, shared across all three systems, and has no mystical justification anybody has ever produced. It is a convention, and it is the same convention that makes a Mulank shared by everyone born on the 5th, 14th and 23rd. What the tradition does with that shared number is where the systems differ; that they arrive at it the same way is simply arithmetic.

Limits of Mulank and Bhagyank readings

Two numbers derived from a date cannot know anything a date does not contain. That sentence rules out most of what these numbers are sold for. Mulank and Bhagyank cannot identify an illness, evaluate a medicine, or tell anyone whether to see a doctor; the health column on the number pages is a list of what the tradition associates with a graha, and it is not a screening tool. They cannot value a business, price a share, or indicate when to buy property. They cannot establish whether two people should marry, and the compatibility table on this page is a statement about two numbers, not two lives.

They also cannot be changed. A name number moves when a spelling moves — that is what name numerology is for — but a date has already happened, and any service offering to correct, upgrade or rectify a Bhagyank is selling something that does not exist. The one honest use of these numbers is the one the tradition actually describes: a vocabulary for noticing a pattern you were half aware of, and a set of practices that are worth doing whether or not the number behind them means anything. Finishing one task, keeping one promise, asking instead of announcing — the remedies on these pages are useful on their own terms, which is the strongest thing that can be said for any of them.

Nothing on this page is a prediction. Where the copy says a Bhagyank arranges circumstances, that is a description of how the tradition reads the number, not a claim that events are fixed. Swarn Siddhi publishes the arithmetic so the reading can be checked, and publishes the limits so the reading is not mistaken for a forecast.

Mulank and Bhagyank questions

What is Mulank?

Mulank is the birth number: the day of the month of your birth, reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9. Someone born on the 4th has Mulank 4; someone born on the 22nd has 2 + 2 = 4 as well. It is read as temperament, pace and first reaction.

How to know your Mulank?

Look only at the day of the month on your birth certificate. If it is 1 to 9, that is your Mulank. If it is 10 to 31, add the two digits: the 29th gives 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Mulank is always reduced fully, so it never stays as 11.

Is Mulank the same as Bhagyank?

No. Mulank uses the day only; Bhagyank uses the whole date including the month and the four-digit year. People confuse them because both come from a birth date and both end in a small number, but they answer different questions and rarely match.

Can Mulank be 11 or 22?

No. Master numbers are preserved in Bhagyank, not in Mulank. Because a day of the month is never more than 31, its digits can never sum past 12, and the tradition reduces the day fully in every case.

Which Mulank belongs to which dates?

Each Mulank covers three or four dates spaced nine apart: Mulank 1 is the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th; Mulank 5 is the 5th, 14th and 23rd. The full chart for all 31 dates is on this page, computed rather than typed.

Does Mulank decide my career?

No, and no responsible practitioner claims it does. The traditional field lists on this site describe where a temperament is usually comfortable. They are a starting point for a conversation, not a filter for a job application.
