Rashi by Name: Find Your Rashi from the First Sound of Your Name

Your rashi by name is read from the first sound of the name: that sound belongs to one nakshatra pada, and the pada falls in one of the twelve rashis — “Rohan” opens on “Ro”, the sound of Swati pada 3, so its rashi is Tula (Libra). It holds only when the name was chosen from the birth star.

  • All 108 nakshatra padas, pada by pada — not whole nakshatras
  • Sounds shared by two nakshatras are shown, never guessed
  • Roman or Devanagari — both are read

Use the rashi naam — the formal name given at the naamkaran — if your family kept one. A nickname, or a school spelling that drifted, gives a clean, confident and unrelated answer.

Rashi by First Letter of Name

A to Z: the sounds a name can open on for each letter, and the rashi each belongs to. Names starting with the same letter can belong to different rashis — the vowel after it decides.

Name Sounds Shared by Two Nakshatras

These sounds are claimed by more than one pada. Devanagari tells some of the pairs apart — the retroflex टा belongs to Purva Phalguni and the dental ता to Swati — so if you know how the name is written, the table below settles it. The calculator reads the sound rather than the letter, so it shows both.

How Rashi by Name Works

In the Namakaran ceremony the family astrologer worked out the Moon's nakshatra and its pada at birth, and the child was named starting with that pada's sound. The name therefore carries the birth star, and reading it backwards — sound to pada, pada to rashi — is a straight lookup.

The pada fixes the rashi, not the nakshatra. 9 nakshatras straddle two rashis: Krittika (pada 1 in Mesh; padas 2, 3, 4 in Vrishabh); Mrigashira (padas 1, 2 in Vrishabh; padas 3, 4 in Mithun); Punarvasu (padas 1, 2, 3 in Mithun; pada 4 in Kark); Uttara Phalguni (pada 1 in Sinh; padas 2, 3, 4 in Kanya); Chitra (padas 1, 2 in Kanya; padas 3, 4 in Tula); Vishakha (padas 1, 2, 3 in Tula; pada 4 in Vrishchik); Uttara Ashadha (pada 1 in Dhanu; padas 2, 3, 4 in Makar); Dhanishta (padas 1, 2 in Makar; padas 3, 4 in Kumbh); Purva Bhadrapada (padas 1, 2, 3 in Kumbh; pada 4 in Meen). A list that files a whole nakshatra under one rashi is wrong for part of each of them.

Rashi by Name or by Date of Birth

They are not equals. A date of birth gives the Moon's actual position; a name gives back only what was decided at a naming ceremony. A grandparent's name, a deity's, a name the parents simply liked — each of those still produces a clean answer here, and it is wrong, and the method cannot tell you so. If the two disagree, the date of birth wins: find your rashi by date of birth.

One exception is worth knowing. Some families use the name rashi for ritual purposes — the sankalpa at a puja — and the birth rashi for everything predictive. That is a coherent position, not a contradiction. But for transits, dasha timing or matching, the chart is the input.

The long-form explanation is in the rashi by name guide.

Rashi by Name FAQ

How do I find my rashi by name?

Take the first sound of the name — the first full syllable, not just the first letter. Each of the 108 nakshatra padas has one sound, and the rashi that pada falls in is the name's rashi. The form above does exactly this, and the whole table is printed below it.

Is rashi by name accurate?

Only for a name chosen from the birth star. At a Namakaran the family astrologer worked out the Moon's pada and gave the sound the name had to start with, so that name carries the chart. A name chosen any other way still returns a confident answer, and the method cannot tell you which case you are in.

Why does my name's sound belong to two nakshatras?

The classical table reuses some sounds — 13 of them are claimed by more than one pada. Every candidate is shown, and you can pick your birth nakshatra if you know it. Picking one silently would be precision the method does not have.

How are names like Priya or Krishna read?

They open on a conjunct (Pr-, Kr-), and the naming table prints no conjunct except Tra. The convention followed here is to take the conjunct's first consonant with the vowel the syllable carries (some astrologers use a plain “a” instead, and the matching page shows that reading too when it changes the score): Priya is read as “Pee” — Uttara Phalguni pada 4, Kanya (Virgo), and Krishna as “Kee” — Mrigashira pada 4, Mithun (Gemini). A name whose sound is still not in the table after that gives no rashi; find it from the date of birth instead.

Which rashi is a name starting with “A”?

“A” is the sound of Krittika pada 1, which falls in Mesh (Aries). The other three padas of the same nakshatra are in a different sign (Ee, U and Ae fall in Vrishabh), so match the vowel carefully.

Is my rashi by name the same as my moon sign?

Only if the name was chosen from the birth chart. The moon sign is the Moon's actual position at birth — an astronomical fact. The name gives back what was decided at the naming ceremony. If they differ, the moon sign from the date of birth is your rashi.

Should I type the name in Hindi or English?

Hindi, if you can. Devanagari keeps apart sounds that the Roman spelling merges — छवि and चवि are both “Chavi” in English — and the table depends on exactly those distinctions.

Does this store the name I type?

No. The lookup runs on the server and nothing is written down. The name is sent in the body of the request, never in the address bar, and the page worked out from it is never cached or indexed.
