Why 108 names

108 is the number of beads on a japa mala, and it recurs throughout Indian tradition — it is, among other things, the 27 nakshatras times their four padas. A list of that length fills exactly one round of the mala.

The shorter lists — Hanuman's twelve names and Durga's thirty-two — are stotras: verses whose phrases are themselves the names, recited whole.
