How the Amavasya date is decided
Amavasya is the fifteenth tithi of Krishna paksha — the new moon — and its day is the one whose sunrise it touches; when it touches none (kshaya) it is kept on the day it runs through. Its month name depends on the reckoning, because the new moon ends a month under amanta and falls mid-month under purnimanta: the same day is Magha Amavasya to a North Indian (purnimanta) calendar and Pausha Amavasya to an amanta one. The table prints both. The named Amavasyas follow simple rules: Somvati when it falls on a Monday, Bhaumvati on a Tuesday, Shani (Shanishchari) on a Saturday; Mauni is the Magha Amavasya; Mahalaya, which closes Pitru Paksha, is the Ashwin Amavasya in purnimanta reckoning and Bhadrapada in amanta. Diwali belongs to the Kartika Amavasya but its Lakshmi Puja is decided in the evening (pradosh), so it can fall the day before the Amavasya listed here — the row says so when it does.
Amavasya 2026 in other cities
The moment that decides the day — sunrise, the evening pradosh or moonrise — differs across India by well over an hour, so the day itself, not only the clock times, can differ between two cities on this list.
This table is recomputed for the city you pick. Those links are variants of this page: each carries a canonical back to the address above and asks search engines not to index it.
Amavasya 2026: common questions
When is Amavasya in 2026?
There are 12 in 2026 for Sydney, all in the table above. The next: Saturday, 10 October 2026 — Ashwin Amavasya (Shani Amavasya, Mahalaya Amavasya); the tithi runs 10 Oct, 03:06 → 11 Oct, 02:50.
How many Amavasyas are there in 2026?
12. A lunation is about 29.5 days, so a year holds 12 or 13 of them, and one Gregorian month can hold two.
When is Somvati Amavasya 2026?
Monday, 15 June 2026; Monday, 9 November 2026. An Amavasya that falls on a Monday is Somvati Amavasya.
When is Mauni Amavasya 2026?
Sunday, 18 January 2026.
When is Mahalaya Amavasya 2026?
Saturday, 10 October 2026.
Why does one Amavasya have two month names?
An amanta calendar ends the month at the new moon, a purnimanta one at the full moon, so every Krishna paksha day carries the next month's name in purnimanta. North India reckons purnimanta; Maharashtra, Gujarat and the South reckon amanta.
Is Amavasya on the same day everywhere in India?
Not always. The day is decided at sunrise, sunset or moonrise, and all three move with the city, so Sydney and a city far to the west or east can disagree about the day itself. Switch city above and the whole table is recomputed.
