What is KP astrology?

KP astrology, or Krishnamurti Paddhati, is a system of Vedic astrology developed by K. S. Krishnamurti (1908–1972) that judges each matter by the sub-lord of the relevant house cusp. It uses the sidereal zodiac and the Vimshottari dasha, as traditional Parashari astrology does, but it changes how houses are drawn and how a planet's results are judged.

Krishnamurti set out the method in six books known as the KP Readers. They cover casting the chart, the principles, prediction, marriage and children, transits, and horary astrology. His aim was precision: a clear yes or no and a timing, with fewer of the overlapping rules that make traditional readings hard to repeat.

KP splits each nakshatra into nine unequal subs: 249 divisions of the zodiac.

Star-lord and sub-lord: the core idea

In KP, every point of the zodiac has three lords:

  • Sign lord: the ruler of the sign, such as Mars for Aries.
  • Star lord: the ruler of the nakshatra, the same lords Vimshottari uses, such as Ketu for Ashwini and Venus for Bharani.
  • Sub-lord: the ruler of the smaller division of the nakshatra the point falls in.

The subs come from dividing each nakshatra of 13°20′ into nine unequal parts in the same proportions as the Vimshottari years. The sequence starts with the nakshatra's own lord and follows the Vimshottari order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. These are the nine subs of Ashwini, which is ruled by Ketu:

Sub-lordVimshottari yearsLength of the subSpan inside Ashwini
Ketu70°46′40″0°00′00″ – 0°46′40″ Aries
Venus202°13′20″0°46′40″ – 3°00′00″ Aries
Sun60°40′00″3°00′00″ – 3°40′00″ Aries
Moon101°06′40″3°40′00″ – 4°46′40″ Aries
Mars70°46′40″4°46′40″ – 5°33′20″ Aries
Rahu182°00′00″5°33′20″ – 7°33′20″ Aries
Jupiter161°46′40″7°33′20″ – 9°20′00″ Aries
Saturn192°06′40″9°20′00″ – 11°26′40″ Aries
Mercury171°53′20″11°26′40″ – 13°20′00″ Aries

Every nakshatra has the same nine lengths, starting from its own lord. Bharani, ruled by Venus, starts with a Venus sub of 2°13′20″ and ends with a Ketu sub.

KP's central maxim follows from this. A planet shows which matters it will deliver through the houses its star lord signifies, and its sub-lord decides whether the result will be favourable. Two planets in the same nakshatra can give opposite results if their sub-lords differ.

Why 249 divisions, not 243

Twenty-seven nakshatras with nine subs each make 243 subs. Nakshatras do not line up neatly with signs, though, and six of those subs straddle a sign boundary. KP counts each of them as two parts, one in each sign, because the sign lord changes at the boundary. That gives 249 divisions of the zodiac, each with its own sign lord, star lord and sub-lord.

The numbers matter in KP horary astrology. The person asking a question picks a number from 1 to 249, and the astrologer casts the chart with the start of that division rising.

Placidus cusps: houses of unequal size

Most Parashari astrologers in India use whole-sign or equal houses. KP uses the Placidus system, which divides the sky by time and produces houses of unequal size. A house can be wider or narrower than 30°, and one sign can hold no cusp at all while another holds two.

In KP the cusp is the beginning of its house, and the sub-lord of each cusp is its most important feature. The 7th cusp's sub-lord is read for marriage, the 10th cusp's for career, and so on.

This is why KP asks for an exact birth time. On average the cusps move about one degree every four minutes, and a sub can be less than a degree wide, so an error of a few minutes can change a cusp's sub-lord. KP astrologers often rectify the birth time, using the ruling planets described below, before they predict anything.

Significators: which planets speak for a house

KP decides which planets can deliver the results of a house through a ranked list of significators. For any house, from strongest to weakest, they are:

  1. planets in the nakshatra of a planet occupying the house;
  2. planets occupying the house;
  3. planets in the nakshatra of the house's owner;
  4. the owner of the house.

Rahu and Ketu also act as agents for the planets they are joined with and for the lords of the signs they occupy. A matter is promised when the sub-lord of its cusp signifies the right group of houses. For marriage, KP checks whether the 7th cusp's sub-lord signifies the 2nd, 7th or 11th house. The event is then timed to the dasha, bhukti and antara of planets that signify those same houses.

Ruling planets

The ruling planets are the planets that rule the moment of judgement. In their basic form there are five:

  • the sign lord of the ascendant at that moment;
  • the star lord of the ascendant;
  • the sign lord of the Moon;
  • the star lord of the Moon;
  • the lord of the weekday.

Krishnamurti taught that the ruling planets at the time a question is examined point to the significators that matter. KP astrologers use them to choose between candidate periods when timing an event, to rectify a birth time, and to answer horary questions.

How KP differs from Parashari astrology

FeatureParashari (traditional)KP
HousesWhole-sign or equal houses from the lagnaPlacidus cusps of unequal size
What decides a resultStrength, dignity, yogas and aspectsThe sub-lord of the cusp and the star lord's significations
Divisional chartsMany, such as the D9 and D10Rarely used; the sub does that work
AyanamsaUsually LahiriThe KP (Krishnamurti) ayanamsa, a few minutes of arc from Lahiri
TimingVimshottari dasha and transitsVimshottari dasha, bhukti and antara, transits and ruling planets
HoraryA Prashna chart for the moment of the questionA number from 1 to 249 chosen by the person asking

Neither system has been shown to predict better than the other. KP's rules are more mechanical, which makes a reading easier to repeat and check. Parashari astrology is broader and says more about character and the quality of a life. Many astrologers use both.

KP on this site

Three tools on this site do the KP arithmetic for you:

  • The KP astrology calculator draws your full KP chart: the twelve Placidus cusps and the nine planets with their sign lords, star lords and sub-lords, the four levels of significators for every house, and the ruling planets of the moment you look.
  • The Prashna Kundli prints the KP sign lord, star lord and sub-lord of the rising degree for the moment you ask a question.
  • The dasha calculator gives your Vimshottari dasha and bhukti dates, the timing layer KP shares with Parashari astrology.

One caution when you compare numbers with KP software: this site uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, and KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa. The difference is only a few minutes of arc, but near a sub boundary it can change a sub-lord.

Frequently asked questions about KP astrology

Is KP astrology more accurate than Vedic astrology?

KP is itself a branch of Vedic astrology, and there is no reliable evidence that either method predicts better. KP's rules are more precisely defined, which makes its readings easier to repeat, not proven to be right.

What is a sub-lord in KP astrology?

Each nakshatra is divided into nine unequal parts in Vimshottari proportions, and the planet ruling the part a point falls in is its sub-lord. KP treats the sub-lord as the deciding factor for whether a matter succeeds.

What is the KP ayanamsa?

It is the ayanamsa Krishnamurti adopted for the system. It differs from the Lahiri ayanamsa by only a few minutes of arc, but that can change a sub-lord near a boundary.

Why does KP need such an exact birth time?

House cusps move about one degree every four minutes on average, and a sub can be less than a degree wide. A few minutes of error can change a cusp's sub-lord and with it the judgement.

What are the numbers 1 to 249 in KP?

They are the 249 divisions of the zodiac by sign, star and sub. In KP horary astrology the person asking picks one, and the chart is cast with that division rising.

Can I use KP with my normal kundli?

Partly. Your planets' degrees give their star lords and sub-lords, but KP's house cusps need the Placidus system, which an ordinary whole-sign kundli does not use.
