What Nadi dosha is
Nadi dosha is when the two partners' Moon nakshatras belong to the same nadi. Every nakshatra is assigned to one of three nadis: Aadi, Madhya or Antya. In Ashtakoot matching (Guna Milan), Nadi is the last and heaviest of the eight kootas, worth 8 of the 36 points. Different nadis score the full 8. The same nadi scores 0, and that zero is what people mean by Nadi dosha.
The three nadis are often explained with the three Ayurvedic constitutions: Aadi with Vata, Madhya with Pitta and Antya with Kapha. The traditional idea is that two partners of the same constitution add to each other's imbalance rather than complementing it. That is a symbolic reading, not a medical test.
Because each nadi holds nine of the twenty-seven nakshatras, roughly one couple in three shares a nadi. It is a common result, not a rare curse.

Which nakshatra has which nadi
This is the table our matching engine scores Nadi on. The pattern runs back and forth across the zodiac, so it cannot be worked out by counting in threes; read your nakshatra off the table instead.
| Aadi (Vata) | Madhya (Pitta) | Antya (Kapha) |
|---|---|---|
| Ashwini | Bharani | Krittika |
| Ardra | Mrigashira | Rohini |
| Punarvasu | Pushya | Ashlesha |
| Uttara Phalguni | Purva Phalguni | Magha |
| Hasta | Chitra | Swati |
| Jyeshtha | Anuradha | Vishakha |
| Mula | Purva Ashadha | Uttara Ashadha |
| Shatabhisha | Dhanishta | Shravana |
| Purva Bhadrapada | Uttara Bhadrapada | Revati |
You need each partner's Moon nakshatra, which comes from the date, time and place of birth. If you only know names, the by-name method reads a nakshatra quarter from the first sound of each name; it is a traditional fallback, not a substitute for birth details. If you already know both nakshatras and Moon signs, the Nadi dosha calculator checks Nadi and Bhakoot from the two stars alone.
Why tradition weighs Nadi so heavily
Nadi carries the most points of any koota, and it is traditionally linked with health, vitality and children. That is why many families look at the Nadi score before the total. A couple can score 28 out of 36 and still have Nadi at 0, and a traditional reader would raise the zero first.
It is worth keeping the weight in proportion. Ashtakoot is a comparison of two Moon positions. It does not look at the rest of either chart, and it cannot measure respect, honesty, money habits, family pressure or whether two people want the same life.
Nadi dosha exceptions our calculator checks
Classical texts list situations in which a same-nadi result is softened or set aside. When you match with birth details on our Gun Milan calculator, the Nadi check names any of these that apply to your two charts:
- Same Moon sign, different nakshatra. Both Moons are in one rashi but in different nakshatras.
- Same nakshatra, different Moon sign. Both Moons are in one nakshatra, but it straddles two rashis and they fall on different sides.
- The same lord for both Moon signs. For example Aries and Scorpio, both ruled by Mars.
- Moon-sign lords who are mutual friends. The calculator applies this strictly: if either planet counts the other as an enemy, the exception does not apply.
Two things are deliberate. First, the score does not change: Nadi still shows 0 of 8, and the exception appears beside it as a traditional softening. That matches how widely used Indian calculators show it, and it keeps the arithmetic honest. Second, the matching by name scores the same koota from the nakshatra each name points to, but it does not list exceptions; for those, match with birth details.
Exceptions the calculator does not apply
Classical books go further than the four checks above, and they do not agree with each other. Some treat the same nakshatra in different quarters (padas) as cancelling the dosha. Some name particular nakshatras for which a same-nadi match is not counted at all, and the lists differ from book to book. Some ask the reader to weigh the strength of Jupiter or of the 7th house in both charts.
We do not apply these, because there is no single version to apply and a calculator that quietly picks one would hide the disagreement. If one of them matters to your family, ask an astrologer to show you the rule and its source, and read it alongside the full charts.
Bhakoot dosh: the other heavy zero
Bhakoot (also spelled Bhakut) is the koota worth 7 points, and it compares the distance between the two Moon signs. It scores 0, which is Bhakoot dosh, on three spacings:
- 2 and 12 (Dwidwadash), traditionally read for money and daily expenses;
- 6 and 8 (Shadashtak), read for health and harmony;
- 5 and 9 (Navpancham), read for children and the family bond. Many schools treat this one as mild, and our report says so.
Every other spacing scores the full 7. The calculator lists two Bhakoot exceptions beside a zero: both Moon signs ruled by the same planet, and Moon-sign lords who are mutual friends. As with Nadi, the zero stays on the score.
When both Nadi and Bhakoot score 0, fifteen of the 36 points are gone at once. That is the case to read row by row rather than by the total.
Nadi dosha remedies
Families who follow the tradition use a few remedies, and all of them are optional:
- chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, at home or with a priest;
- a Nadi dosha nivaran puja before the wedding;
- charity in the couple's name, traditionally food, grain or clothes for those who need them.
No remedy is needed to marry, and no remedy should come with fear or a large bill. If health and children are the real worry behind the question, the tests doctors actually use answer it better than any koota. Thalassaemia carrier screening, for example, is common advice for couples in India. A nadi says nothing about blood groups or genes.
Most of all, a matching score is a conversation starter. Consent, respect, honesty and safety are what decide a marriage, and no calculator can measure them. Our Hindi guide शादी के लिए कितने गुण explains the whole 36-point score, and Ashtakoota compatibility covers all eight kootas.
Frequently asked questions about Nadi dosha
Is Nadi dosha cancelled if the guna score is high?
No. The total and the Nadi row are read separately: a couple can score 28 of 36 with Nadi at 0. Tradition looks at the zero first, then at the exceptions and the full charts.
What are the exceptions to Nadi dosha?
Our calculator names four: the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, the same nakshatra in different Moon signs, the same lord for both Moon signs, and Moon-sign lords who are mutual friends. Classical books add others, such as different padas of one nakshatra, and they do not agree with each other.
Does Nadi dosha mean we cannot have children?
No. That is a fear-based reading. Nadi is a symbolic comparison of two Moon positions; if health or children are the real concern, medical tests such as thalassaemia carrier screening are what answer it.
What is Bhakoot dosh?
It is a 0 in the 7-point Bhakoot koota, when the two Moon signs are 2 and 12, 6 and 8, or 5 and 9 apart. Many schools treat the 5 and 9 spacing as mild. The calculator lists the same-lord and friendly-lord exceptions beside it.
Can we marry with Nadi dosha?
Many couples do. The tradition offers optional remedies such as the Mahamrityunjaya mantra or a nivaran puja, but consent, respect and the whole relationship matter far more than one koota.
