The 12 Types of Kaal Sarp Dosha
The house Rahu occupies names the type; Ketu is always in the seventh house from it. The tradition reads each type as concentrating on the subjects of those two houses.

The spellings vary between sources — Shankhachood also appears as Shankhachud, Shankhachur or Shankhnaad, Padma as Padam — but the name always follows Rahu's house.
How the Kaal Sarp Calculator Decides
- Your date, time and place give the sidereal (Lahiri) longitudes of the seven grahas and Rahu. Ketu is always exactly 180° from Rahu.
- Each graha's distance ahead of Rahu is measured in zodiac order. Kaal Sarp forms only when all seven lie between 0° and 180°, or all seven between 180° and 360°. Degrees decide, not signs.
- A graha sitting exactly on a node's degree breaks the hemming.
- The type is named by Rahu's whole-sign house from the Lagna.
- The app's Doshas card applies the same rule through the same engine, so the two never disagree.
Why Kaal Sarp Calculators Disagree
The traditions split on several points, and this page states each choice it makes:
- Degrees or signs. Some tools look only at signs, so a graha in Rahu's sign but behind Rahu is counted inside. Here degrees decide.
- Direction. Some astrologers call the Ketu-to-Rahu arrangement Kaal Amrit, or do not treat it as a dosha. Both sides count here, and the result says which side your grahas are on.
- Partial Kaal Sarp. Some call a chart with one graha outside a partial dosha. Here the rule either holds or it does not.
- Mean or true node. The two ways of computing Rahu differ by up to about 1.5°, which can move a graha that sits on the boundary.
Kaal Sarp Dosha in Context
Kaal Sarp does not appear in the foundational texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; it is a later tradition. Kaal Sarp Dosha Practices
If you want a traditional practice, the free ones come first: chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra or Om Namah Shivaya daily, worship of Shiva on Mondays, and keeping Nag Panchami. A temple Kaal Sarp puja is optional; anyone selling it with fear and urgency is selling, not reading your chart.
