Ram mantra: Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram and Rama Rameti
In Rama's tradition his name is itself the mantra: Ram-nam is chanted, sung and written out by hand more than any longer text.
Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram: the Ram mantra
श्री राम जय राम जय जय राम
Shri Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama
Source: A traditional thirteen-syllable mantra of Rama's name, especially loved in Maharashtra.
Meaning: "Shri Rama — victory to Rama, victory, victory to Rama." Thirteen syllables of praise, chanted in kirtan and on the mala alike.
When it is chanted: Any time; above all on Ram Navami.
Shri Rama Rama Rameti: the verse of Rama's name
श्रीराम राम रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे ।
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ॥
Shrirama Rama Rameti Rame Rame Manorame
Sahasranama Tattulyam Ramanama Varanane
Source: Shiva's words to Parvati in the Padma Purana (Uttara Khanda), recited at the close of the Vishnu Sahasranama and in the Rama Raksha Stotra. The Padma Purana's own text opens 'Rama Rameti Rameti'.
Meaning: "Saying 'Rama, Rama, Rama', I delight in Rama, the delight of the mind. Rama's name equals the thousand names, O lovely-faced one." Shiva's words to Parvati at the close of the Vishnu Sahasranama.
When it is chanted: Recited three times, traditionally in place of the full Vishnu Sahasranama when time is short.
Om Shri Ramaya Namah
ॐ श्रीरामाय नमः
Om Shriramaya Namah
Source: A traditional salutation; it is also the first name of the Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali.
Meaning: "Om, salutation to Shri Rama."
When it is chanted: Daily japa, 108 times on a mala.
How to chant a Rama mantra
- Keep to one mantra; changing mantras every few days is the commonest way a practice fades.
- Sit at the same time each day, after a bath if you can, facing east or north.
- Chant on a mala of 108 beads — one mala is the customary measure — and turn the mala at the larger meru bead rather than crossing it.
- Say the words clearly, at a pace you can keep; attention matters more than speed.
- The traditional time for Rama is Ram Navami; any day is fine for a daily practice.
Mantra practice belongs to a tradition of devotion and reflection. It is not a substitute for medical, legal or financial help, and no mantra comes with a promised result.
