Date of birth · Western and Vedic · from the ephemeris
Sun Sign Calculator
Enter your date of birth to find your Sun sign in both zodiacs. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, which now sits about 24° behind it, so most people's Vedic Sun sign is the sign before their Western one. Both come from the Swiss Ephemeris, not a fixed date table.

Sun Sign Calculator
- Western and Vedic signs, side by side
- The Sun's exact degree, from the Swiss Ephemeris
- A birth on the day the Sun changed sign is flagged, with the minute
Worked example, 15 August 1995, 10:30, New Delhi: Western (tropical) Sun in Leo at 21°55′; Vedic (sidereal) Sun in Kark (Cancer) at 28°07′.
| Zodiac | Sun sign | Position | The Sun was in this sign from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Western (tropical) | Leo | 21°55′ Leo | 23 July 1995 to 23 August 1995 |
| Vedic (sidereal, Lahiri) | Kark (Cancer) | 28°07′ Cancer | 17 July 1995 to 17 August 1995 |
Western reading. The Sun stands for your core self, will and vitality. In Western astrology a Leo Sun is described as warm, generous and at ease in the spotlight.
Vedic reading. Your kundli places the Sun in Kark (Cancer), where it is in a friend's sign. A Vedic chart reads a planet with its house, which needs your birth time and place: the free kundli shows it.
Why the two differ. At this date the two zodiacs stood 23°47′ apart (the Lahiri ayanamsa), so the same Sun at 21°55′ Leo in the Western zodiac is at 28°07′ Cancer in the Vedic one. The two signs match only when the planet sits in the first 6° or so of its Vedic sign.
Read at 10:30; in New Delhi, India (28.6139°N, 77.2090°E, Asia/Kolkata).
The calculator reads the Sun's position at your birth from the Swiss Ephemeris, the same planetary tables our kundli uses, twice: measured from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac of Western astrology) and measured from the stars with the Lahiri ayanamsa (the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology, used across India).
Each sign is 30° wide in both. The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, so a date usually settles the sign. On the day it changes sign the answer depends on the hour, and the result then names both signs and the minute of the change: add your birth time.
Without a birth place the date is read in India time. The place matters only for the clock (it moves the hour of a sign change), never for which sign the planet was in.
The tropical zodiac starts at the March equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator going north. The sidereal zodiac starts from a fixed point among the stars (opposite the star Chitra, by the Lahiri convention). Because the equinox slides slowly backwards against the stars (precession, about 1° every 72 years), the two zodiacs drift apart. Today they are 24°14′ apart.
So the same planet usually sits one sign earlier in a Vedic chart than in a Western one: a Western Leo Sun is most often a Vedic Kark (Cancer) Sun. Neither sign is wrong; they answer to different traditions. A Vedic rashi, the sign most Indian astrologers ask for, is the Moon's sidereal sign, not the Sun's: the rashi calculator finds it.
Worked out by the same engine for 2026, in India time (IST). Born in another country? The dates are the same; the hour of each change moves with your clock.

Sun Sign Calculator FAQ
How do I find my Sun sign?
Enter your date of birth. The calculator reads the Sun's position for that date from the ephemeris and gives the sign in the Western and the Vedic zodiac, with the dates the Sun held each.
What is the difference between Western and Vedic Sun signs?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars. They are about 24° apart today, so the Vedic sign is usually one sign earlier than the Western one.
Do I need my birth time for my Sun sign?
Usually not: the Sun stays in a sign for about a month. On the one day it changes sign the hour decides, and the calculator then shows both signs and the minute of the change.
Which zodiac does this site use?
Our kundli and every Vedic page use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India. This calculator also shows the Western sign, labelled, for readers who follow it.
Is my Sun sign my rashi?
No. In India, rashi means the Moon's sidereal sign at birth, which changes every two and a half days and needs a birth time. The Sun sign is the Sun's; the rashi calculator finds the Moon's.
Why do sun sign dates change from year to year?
The Sun reaches each sign at a slightly different hour every year, because the calendar year is not exactly the solar year. The table on this page gives this year's dates.
What are the Vedic Sun sign dates?
The Sun enters each sidereal sign at a sankranti, around the 14th to 17th of each month: Makar Sankranti in mid-January, Mesha Sankranti in mid-April. The table lists this year's.
