Grahan Dosha present
Grahan Dosha is present: the Sun is in Scorpio with Rahu, 1.3° apart.
| Graha | Sign | House | With a node? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Scorpio | 7th house | Yes — Rahu, 1.3° apart |
| Moon | Aries | 12th house | No |
| Rahu | Scorpio | 7th house | — |
| Ketu | Taurus | 1st house | — |
None of the softening conditions the texts cite is present in this chart. That changes how much weight the tradition gives it, not what will happen.
The nearest eclipse was the total lunar eclipse of 29 November 1993, 3 days after the birth, not visible at the birth place. The birth was not during it, so the original sense of Grahan Dosha, birth during an eclipse, does not apply.
This combination is common: it appears in about three charts in ten. Read it as one feature of the chart, not as proof of a personal misfortune.
How the Grahan Dosh Calculator Decides
- Your date, time and place give the sidereal (Lahiri) positions of the Sun, the Moon, Rahu and Ketu, and the whole-sign houses from your Lagna.
- Grahan Dosha is reported when the Sun or the Moon is in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu: Surya Grahan Dosha for the Sun, Chandra Grahan Dosha for the Moon. A chart can have both.
- The degrees between the two are printed too, because a close pair is read as stronger than a wide one in the same sign.
- The calculator also searches the eclipses around your birth and says whether you were born during one at your birth place.
- The app's Doshas card applies the same rule through the same engine, so the two never disagree.
Grahan Dosha and Real Eclipses
Grahan means eclipse. The oldest sense of the dosha is birth during a solar or lunar eclipse: the birth-time shanti chapters of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra list it with birth on Amavasya or at a Sankranti as times that call for a pacification rite. An eclipse needs the Sun and Moon close to a node, which is why the later, wider reading counts every Sun or Moon conjunction with Rahu or Ketu. Most charts with the conjunction were not born during an eclipse, and the result says which yours is.
Where Grahan Dosha Readings Differ
- Eclipse or conjunction. Some astrologers keep the word for birth during an eclipse; most calculators use the conjunction. This page reports both.
- How close. Some count only a close conjunction, within about ten to twelve degrees; others the whole sign. The degrees are printed so you can apply either.
- Aspects. Some also count Rahu's aspect on a luminary. The result notes it when your chart has one, but it is not counted.
- Mean or true node. The two ways of computing Rahu differ by up to about 1.5°, which can move a pair that sits at a sign's edge.
What Grahan Dosha Does Not Mean
It is not a curse, and it does not foretell illness, a parent's suffering or failure. The Sun and the Moon pass the nodes every year, so about three charts in ten carry the conjunction. The tradition reads it as a sensitive point for the luminary — the Sun for confidence and the father, the Moon for the mind and the mother — to be supported, not feared.
Grahan Dosha Practices
The traditional responses cost nothing: offering water to the rising Sun or reciting the Aditya Hridayam for the Sun; worship of Shiva on Mondays and the Chandra mantra for the Moon; quiet japa and charity on eclipse days. A paid Grahan puja is optional, never required.
Grahan Dosh Calculator FAQ
What is Grahan Dosha?
Grahan Dosha is the Sun or the Moon in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu in a birth chart. The word means eclipse, and its oldest sense is birth during a solar or lunar eclipse.
How do I check Grahan Dosha in my kundli?
Enter your date of birth, exact birth time and birth place above. The calculator checks whether the Sun or the Moon shares a sign with Rahu or Ketu, how many degrees apart they are, and whether you were born during an eclipse.
What is the difference between Surya and Chandra Grahan Dosha?
Surya Grahan Dosha is the Sun with Rahu or Ketu; Chandra Grahan Dosha is the Moon with Rahu or Ketu. A chart can have either, both or neither.
Is Grahan Dosha the same as being born during an eclipse?
Not usually. Birth during an eclipse is the original meaning, but most calculators count any conjunction of a luminary with a node, and most such births were not during an eclipse. The result here reports both.
How common is Grahan Dosha?
About three charts in ten carry the conjunction, because the Sun and the Moon pass the nodes every year. It is a common feature, not a rare affliction.
What are the remedies for Grahan Dosha?
The traditional ones are free: water offered to the rising Sun or the Aditya Hridayam for the Sun, Shiva worship on Mondays for the Moon, and japa and charity on eclipse days. Paid pujas are optional.
