East Facing House Vastu

A east facing house is one whose main door you walk out of facing east. Vastu divides that wall (45°–135°) into eight door positions; the favoured ones are E3 Jayanta, E4 Indra.

  • Door positions and bearings are the ones the app's compass uses
  • Every position's traditional name and label
  • Practical checks, not fear

Stand inside and look out: position 1 is at the northeast corner on your left and position 8 at the southeast corner on your right. Each position is 11.25° wide.

What the Tradition Says About a East Facing House

East is the direction of Indra and the rising Sun, and the tradition gives an east-facing entrance a warm welcome for that reason. It still names only some positions on the east wall as favoured, so the door's place along the wall is the question to ask.

An east entrance takes the morning sun and falls into shade by the afternoon, which suits an Indian summer well.

Zones on the East Side

In the 16-zone system, the parts of the home behind this wall are tied to these themes:

Practical Checks for a East Facing House

  • Keep the approach to the door clear, lit and safe underfoot.
  • Make sure the door opens fully and closes easily — hinges, frame and threshold in repair.
  • Keep the outside free of rubbish and broken things.
  • In a flat, read your own door, not the building's: the facing is the way you walk out of it.

Vastu is a traditional framework for arranging a home, not a guarantee of health, wealth or any outcome. Never change the structure of a building on a direction alone; ask a qualified engineer.

Questions people ask

Is a east facing house good as per Vastu?

No facing is bad in itself. The tradition reads a east facing house by where its door sits: the favoured positions on this wall are E3 (Jayanta), E4 (Indra).

Where should the main door be in a east facing house?

Standing inside and looking out, the wall runs from the northeast corner on your left to the southeast corner on your right, in eight positions. The favoured ones are E3 (Jayanta), E4 (Indra); a compass reading of the door tells you which you have.

How do I know if my house is east facing?

Stand just inside the main door, look out, and read a compass. The direction you face is the direction the house faces. Correct the reading from magnetic to true north for your place.

What if my door is in a less-preferred position?

Nothing needs to be broken or moved. Keep the approach clear, lit and in good repair, add a symbol only if it matters to you, and change the building only for a real need and on an engineer's advice.
