Door positions · the direction of Yama
South Facing House Vastu
A south facing house is one whose main door you walk out of facing south. Vastu divides that wall (135°–225°) into eight door positions; the favoured ones are S3 Vitatha, S4 Grihrakshita (Gruhakshat).
- Door positions and bearings are the ones the app's compass uses
- Every position's traditional name and label
- Practical checks, not fear

Measure your own door with the Vastu compass: stand in the doorway facing out and hold the phone flat.
What the Tradition Says About a South Facing House
South is Yama's direction, which is where the south-facing house got its fearsome reputation. The classical door grid does not condemn the south wall: like every other wall, it has favoured positions, and a door in one of them is read as well placed.
A south face takes strong sun for much of the year in India, so shading — a verandah, a deep overhang, trees — does more for the house than any symbol.
Zones on the South Side
In the 16-zone system, the parts of the home behind this wall are tied to these themes:
| Zone | Bearing | Theme | Place here | Avoid here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South-southeast (SSE) | 146.25°–168.75° | Confidence & power | Master Bedroom (elder), Confidence Corner | Water Feature, Toilet |
| South (S) | 168.75°–191.25° | Fame & relaxation | Relaxation Lounge, Awards Wall, Media | Main Entrance, Water Tank, Underground Water |
| South-southwest (SSW) | 191.25°–213.75° | Expenses & wastage | Toilet, Store Room, Staircase | Cash Locker, Bedroom, Kitchen |
Practical Checks for a South Facing House
- Keep the approach to the door clear, lit and safe underfoot.
- Make sure the door opens fully and closes easily — hinges, frame and threshold in repair.
- Keep the outside free of rubbish and broken things.
- In a flat, read your own door, not the building's: the facing is the way you walk out of it.
Vastu is a traditional framework for arranging a home, not a guarantee of health, wealth or any outcome. Never change the structure of a building on a direction alone; ask a qualified engineer.
Questions people ask
Is a south facing house good as per Vastu?
No facing is bad in itself. The tradition reads a south facing house by where its door sits: the favoured positions on this wall are S3 (Vitatha), S4 (Grihrakshita (Gruhakshat)).
Where should the main door be in a south facing house?
Standing inside and looking out, the wall runs from the southeast corner on your left to the southwest corner on your right, in eight positions. The favoured ones are S3 (Vitatha), S4 (Grihrakshita (Gruhakshat)); a compass reading of the door tells you which you have.
How do I know if my house is south facing?
Stand just inside the main door, look out, and read a compass. The direction you face is the direction the house faces. Correct the reading from magnetic to true north for your place.
What if my door is in a less-preferred position?
Nothing needs to be broken or moved. Keep the approach clear, lit and in good repair, add a symbol only if it matters to you, and change the building only for a real need and on an engineer's advice.
