- Where these rules come from: the karnavedha rules Drik Panchang states, which follow the sanskara chapter of Muhurta Chintamani. Drik answers one day at a time against a child's birth details and publishes no year list, so the rules are applied here to every day of the year and the list is this page's own.
- Kharmas is closed: no date while the Sun is in Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meena (Pisces) (16 December 2025 – 14 January 2026, 15 March 2026 – 14 April 2026 and 16 December 2026 – 14 January 2027).
- Chaturmas is closed: from the moment Devshayani Ekadashi begins (24 July 2026, 9:13 AM) to the moment Devuthani Ekadashi begins (20 November 2026, 7:16 AM).
- Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (the Vedic weekday, which changes at sunrise). Never Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Nakshatra: the Moon in one of these 10 — Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta and Revati.
- Tithi: any tithi of either fortnight except Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi or Amavasya.
- An adhika month is closed: Adhika Jyeshtha, an adhika month, runs from 17 May 2026 to 15 June 2026.
- By day, before aparahna: the ears are pierced in daylight and before aparahna, the fourth of the day's five parts — so every window here ends at the close of madhyahna, three fifths of the way from sunrise to sunset.
- Age — guidance, not computed: the texts give the 10th, 12th or 16th day after birth, or the 6th, 7th or 8th month; after the first year, an odd year — the third, the fifth. Many families now hold it with the mundan. Settle the age by custom; this list gives the day.
- Which ear first: a boy's right ear first, a girl's left.
- The day: sunrise to the next sunrise, for New Delhi. A day any closed period touches is left out whole; inside the days that remain, the muhurat is the time when every condition above holds at once, for at least 20 minutes.
- Not checked here: the lagna (one ruled by Jupiter or Venus — Vrishabha, Tula, Dhanu or Meena — is preferred), the child's Chandra bala and Tara bala, and the child's own birth month and birth nakshatra, which are avoided. A priest checks these against the child's birth details.
- No computed year list. The large almanacs answer ear piercing one day at a time against the child's birth details, and the lists that circulate are not computed from one rule set. This page applies the stated rules above to every day of the year.
- Guru and Shukra asta. Some texts also close karnavedha while Jupiter or Venus is combust; the stated rules this page follows do not, so those days stay.
- A few months only. Some guides keep ear piercing to Kartika, Pausha, Chaitra and Phalguna; the stated rules close only Kharmas and Chaturmas.
- Afternoon and night windows. None here: a list that prints a karnavedha window after madhyahna is not applying the aparahna rule.
- The city. The day starts at sunrise, so a window near dawn can fall on a different date in another city.

At what age is ear piercing done?
The texts give the 10th, 12th or 16th day after birth, or the 6th, 7th or 8th month; after the first year, an odd year — the third or the fifth. Many families now hold it with the mundan. The age is decided by custom; this list gives the day.
Can ear piercing be done in Kharmas or Chaturmas?
Not on this list: both are closed. Kharmas is 16 December 2025 – 14 January 2026, 15 March 2026 – 14 April 2026 and 16 December 2026 – 14 January 2027; Chaturmas is 24 July 2026 – 20 November 2026.

By day, before aparahna. Every window on this list ends at the close of madhyahna, three fifths of the way from sunrise to sunset, so the times move with the season and the city.
Why does another panchang show different dates?
Each difference is set out above under 'Why other calendars show different dates' — which rules differ, and which windows this list keeps that others leave out.
