How to chant the Shukra mantra

  1. Begin on a Friday, in a Shukra hora if you can; today's for your city are in the table further down.
  2. Sit facing east or north on a mat, with a mala of 108 beads and the larger meru bead.
  3. Chant the beej mantra once for each bead. At the meru, turn the mala round instead of crossing it.
  4. Do 4 malas (432 repetitions) a day. Over 40 days that completes the traditional 16,000.
  5. Keep the same time and place each day. Traditions differ on what to do after a missed day, so follow your teacher's or your family's custom.

Shukra Puranic mantra from the Navagraha Stotra

The Navagraha Stotra, traditionally ascribed to Vyasa, gives one verse to each graha. This is the verse for Shukra, recited after the beej mantra or in its place.

हिमकुन्दमृणालाभं दैत्यानां परमं गुरुम् ।
सर्वशास्त्रप्रवक्तारं भार्गवं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥

Himakundamrinalabham Daityanam Paramam Gurum
Sarvashastrapravaktaram Bhargavam Pranamamyaham

What the verse says: I bow to Bhargava (Shukra), white as snow, jasmine and lotus stalk, supreme teacher of the Daityas, expounder of every shastra.

Shukra mantra japa count: why 16,000

The traditional total for the Shukra beej mantra is 16,000 repetitions, kept within a mandala of 40 days. The number that matters day to day is the daily load: 16,000 over 40 days, rounded up to whole malas of 108, is 4 malas — 432 repetitions — a day.

These totals are a convention of the tradition, not a formula: they do not follow the Vimshottari dasha years, and different texts give different numbers. Treat 16,000 as the commonly taught figure rather than the only one. One mala a day kept steadily is the usual place to start if the full load is too much.

Alongside the beej mantra, the longer recitation traditionally paired with Shukra: Shukra Stotra.
