Udaya tithi — why the sunrise tithi is the tithi of the day
The panchang counts a day from sunrise to the next sunrise, not from midnight. The tithi running at sunrise — the udaya tithi — is the tithi of that whole day, even when it ends at breakfast. A tithi that touches no sunrise is kshaya and names no day; one that touches two sunrises (vriddhi) names both. Festivals do not always follow this rule: Karwa Chauth is decided at moonrise, Diwali in pradosh kaal and Janmashtami at midnight, so each festival's own page applies its own moment.
