The Five Limbs of the Panchang at Birth
Panchang means five limbs, and each is a different clock read off the Sun and the Moon. The panchang at birth is those five clocks stopped at the moment of birth — the same five an almanac prints for every day, read for one minute.
- Tithi — the lunar day: each 12° the Moon gains on the Sun, thirty to a lunar month, fifteen in the waxing (Shukla) half and fifteen in the waning (Krishna) half. A tithi lasts roughly 19 to 26 hours.
- Nakshatra — the Moon's star: 27 divisions of 13°20′, each in four padas of 3°20′. The birth nakshatra starts the Vimshottari dasha and gives the traditional first syllable of a name.
- Yoga — the Sun and the Moon's longitudes added together, cut into 27 parts; each yoga is classed as auspicious or not.
- Karana — half a tithi: eleven karanas, seven repeating and four fixed, sixty to a lunar month.
- Vara — the weekday, counted from sunrise to sunrise and ruled by the planet of that day.
Why the Birth Weekday Can Differ From the Calendar
A civil date changes at midnight; a panchang day changes at sunrise. Someone born at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday is born in Monday's panchang day, so their vara is Monday and the limbs are read from Monday's almanac page. The calculator finds the sunrise at the birth place and says so whenever the two differ.
The same is true of every limb's timing. A tithi or nakshatra that began before sunrise is still the one running, which is why the table prints each limb's real start and end rather than the sunrise-to-sunrise window a daily page shows.
Birth Nakshatra Pada and the Naming Syllable
Each of the 108 padas carries a traditional syllable used for the first sound of a name. The worked example's Moon is in Purva Phalguni pada 2, whose syllable is “Ta”. The pada also fixes the Moon sign when a nakshatra straddles two signs, which is why the pada — not only the nakshatra — is worth knowing.
Panchang Calculator Verification
The worked example is the birth AstroSage uses in its published sample Brihat Kundli. Every limb agrees; the sunrise differs by a few seconds, which is the difference between two sunrise conventions (refraction and the Sun's disc) and does not change any limb.
| Limb | This calculator | AstroSage's published sample |
|---|---|---|
| Tithi | Pratipada (Shukla paksha) | Pratipad (Shukla paksha) |
| Nakshatra | Purva Phalguni, pada 2 | Purvaphalgini, pada 2 |
| Yoga | Shiva | Siva |
| Karana | Bava | Bav |
| Weekday | Thursday | Thursday |
| Sunrise | 05:53:51 | 05:54:06 |
Limits of the Panchang Calculator
The five limbs depend only on the Sun, the Moon and the local sunrise, so a birth time a few minutes out rarely changes them — except near a boundary, which the start and end times in the table let you see. The month, samvat and season are those of the panchang day, read at its sunrise, as an almanac prints them. Positions use the Lahiri ayanamsa. Traditional associations are printed as associations: a yoga or karana at birth is a feature of the almanac, not a verdict on a person.
Panchang Calculator FAQ
What is a panchang calculator?
It gives the five limbs of the Hindu almanac — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and vara — for any date, time and place. For a birth it is the panchang at birth, sometimes called the janma panchang.
How do I find the tithi of my birth?
Enter the date, exact time and place of birth. The result gives the tithi running at that minute, its paksha, and when it began and ended.
Why does my birth weekday differ from the calendar?
A panchang day runs from sunrise to sunrise. If you were born after midnight but before sunrise, your vara is the previous day's, and the page says so.
What is the nakshatra pada?
Each nakshatra is split into four padas of 3°20′. The pada fixes the traditional naming syllable and, for nakshatras that straddle two signs, the Moon sign.
Does the birth panchang need an exact birth time?
Only near a boundary. Tithi, nakshatra and yoga each last most of a day, but a birth close to a change needs the right minute; the start and end times show how close.
Which ayanamsa does this panchang calculator use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the Indian standard. Tithi and karana do not depend on it; nakshatra and yoga do.
