Guna Milan from dates · free · no birth time needed
Enter two dates of birth to get the Guna Milan score out of 36, both Moon signs and nakshatras, and an honest range wherever the unknown birth time matters. The worked example below, 12 April 1990 with 23 August 1992, scores 9.5–27/36.
A worked example, so the result is visible before you fill in the form. On the boy's date the Moon kept one sign all day; on the girl's it changed both sign and nakshatra — so some kootas are settled and some are not.

On 12 April 1990 the Moon stayed in Tula (Libra) all day, so the boy's Moon sign is settled by the date. The nakshatra changed during the day: Swati, then Vishakha.
On 23 August 1992 the Moon moved from Vrishabh (Taurus) into Mithun (Gemini) at 12:23, so the girl's Moon sign depends on the birth time. The nakshatra changed during the day: Rohini, then Mrigashira, then Ardra.

Numerology is a separate tradition from Guna Milan. Its verdict is shown beside the 36-point score, not added to it, because there is no classical scale that combines the two.
Mangal dosha, the ascendant, the houses and the navamsa are not shown here, and that is deliberate. Mangal dosha depends on the house Mars occupies, houses are counted from the ascendant, and the ascendant turns over about every two hours. A date cannot fix it, so any figure for it would be a guess.
If you know both birth times, the full Kundli matching gives the exact score, Mangal dosha on both sides and the classical cancellations; the Manglik dosha calculator checks one chart.
The calculation is the Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoot matching: eight tests, or kootas, worth 36 points between them. Every one of them is read from the Moon at birth — four from the Moon's nakshatra (Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi) and four from the Moon's sign (Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot). Nothing else in the birth chart enters the score, which is why two dates can say as much as they do.
Kundli matching without the birth time loses exactly the parts of a match that hang on the ascendant, and keeps the parts that hang on the Moon. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day. A nakshatra is 13 degrees 20 minutes wide, so on almost every date the Moon changes nakshatra once; a sign is 30 degrees wide, so on roughly two dates in five it changes sign as well.
That is why this page never prints a single score it cannot stand behind. On a date where the Moon keeps one nakshatra and one sign, all eight kootas are settled and the score is exact. On a date where the nakshatra changes, Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi may change with it; where the sign changes, Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot may too. The table of kootas in the result marks each one either way, so you can see which part of the answer the dates have decided.
If your family knows even roughly when each of you was born — morning or evening — the windows in the result tell you which row applies, and the range usually collapses to one number. With exact times, the full Kundli matching computes the same eight kootas plus Mangal dosha and the classical cancellations.
Four kootas compare the two Moon signs. Varna and Vashya describe temperament and mutual pull; Graha Maitri asks whether the planets ruling the two Moon signs are friends, which is read as ease of understanding; Bhakoot counts how far apart the two signs sit. Moon signs two, five, six, eight, nine or twelve apart in either direction form the three Bhakoot dosha axes (2-12, 5-9 and 6-8) and score zero; every other spacing scores the full seven.
The other four read the nakshatra. Tara counts the distance between the two birth stars in cycles of nine. Yoni gives each nakshatra an animal and scores the pair from natural friendship to enmity. Gana sorts the nakshatras into Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa temperaments. Nadi, the heaviest at eight points, groups them into three constitutions and scores zero when both partners share one — the Nadi dosha that families ask about first.
The bands below are the ones the site's full matching report uses, so a score read here means the same thing there. Classical practice treats a score below about half of 36 as a reason to look at the whole chart before deciding, and every tradition treats the number as the start of a reading rather than its conclusion.
| Guna score | Band |
|---|---|
| 31–36 | Excellent match |
| 21–30 | Good match |
| 17–20 | Average — needs effort |
| 0–16 | Workable with awareness and effort |
A range that crosses a band line — 19 to 24, say — is not a weaker answer than a single number. It is the answer the dates actually support, and it tells you that knowing the birth times would change the verdict, which is itself worth knowing before anyone decides anything.
Many people searching for compatibility by date of birth mean numerology, not the Moon. The result therefore also compares the two mulank numbers (the day of the month reduced to one digit) and the two bhagyank numbers (the whole date reduced), using the friend, neutral and enemy table from the site's numerology calculators. It is printed separately because it is a separate tradition, and the two are never added into one percentage.
Guna Milan is a traditional framework, not a measurement of love and not a prediction. Couples with modest scores build good marriages and couples with high ones do not, and no calculator — this one included — knows two people. The score is best used the way astrologers use it: as a set of questions about temperament and expectations to talk through, never as a verdict on a relationship.
Three technical limits apply. The Moon is computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the Indian standard; a site using another ayanamsa can place a boundary a few minutes differently. Three kootas are directional, so swapping the two partners can change the score by a point or two. And the place, when given, sets only the time zone: two people born on the same calendar date in Delhi and in New York were born on different stretches of the Moon's path.
Yes. Guna Milan is read entirely from the Moon, and a date fixes the Moon to within about 13 degrees. On many dates that settles the whole 36-point score; on the rest this calculator shows the range and which part of the day gives which score.
It is exact for every koota the dates settle and honest about the rest. What it cannot do is anything that needs the ascendant — Mangal dosha, houses and the navamsa — because the ascendant changes about every two hours.
On this site 21 to 30 is a good match, 31 to 36 excellent, 17 to 20 average and 16 or below a match that needs care. Most astrologers also look past the number to Nadi and Bhakoot dosha before advising.
Because on that date the Moon changed nakshatra or sign, and the dates alone cannot say which side of the change each birth fell on. The share next to each value is the share of possible birth times that give it.
Slightly. Varna, Vashya and Gana are scored in one direction, groom first, as in every Kundli matching, so swapping the two can move the total by a point or two.
Here it is the Guna Milan score drawn on a 0 to 36 scale, with the possible range shaded when the birth times are unknown. It is not a percentage of love; it is a traditional compatibility score, and it is labelled as one.
No. Numerology compares mulank and bhagyank numbers from the dates; Guna Milan compares the two Moons. The result shows both, separately.
Only if the birth was outside India. The place sets the time zone, which decides which 24 hours count as that date; a blank place is read as Indian Standard Time.
