Gun Milan: what the 36 points are actually made of.

The eight kootas are not worth the same. Nadi alone carries 8 points and Varna carries 1 — so two couples can both score 28 and mean completely different things. This calculates your score and shows you where every point came from.

Both birth details

Classical Gun Milan calculates the male partner first, so the labels keep the scoring order clear.

Male partner
Female partner

Gun Milan reads the Moon's Nakshatra, so the birth time matters. The Moon changes Nakshatra roughly once a day.

The eight kootas, and what each one is worth.

This is the part most score reports leave out. The 36 points are distributed unevenly on purpose — the tradition weights compatibility of health and lineage far above compatibility of temperament at work.

Ashtakoot point distribution
KootaPointsShareWhat it measures
Varna13%Work and ego temperament. The groom's varna is traditionally expected to equal or exceed the bride's.
Vashya26%Mutual influence and attraction — which partner naturally holds sway, read from the sign groups.
Tara38%The count between the two birth stars, taken as a signal for health, fortune and longevity.
Yoni411%Physical and intimate compatibility, expressed through the animal symbol of each Nakshatra.
Graha Maitri514%Mental rapport, read from the friendship between the two Moon-sign lords.
Gana617%Temperament class — Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa — and how those natures meet under stress.
Bhakut719%The spacing between the two Moon signs. Certain distances raise Bhakoot dosha.
Nadi822%Constitutional type. The same Nadi in both charts raises Nadi dosha and scores zero of eight.

Why 28 is not always better than 24

A couple scoring 28 with a zero in Nadi has failed the single heaviest test. A couple scoring 24 with points spread across all eight has not failed any. An astrologer reads the second as the safer match, which the totals reverse.

What the thresholds mean

Below 18 is conventionally treated as weak, 18 to 24 as workable and above 24 as strong. These are reference bands, not rules — and they were never meant to be applied without looking at which kootas produced the number.

Doshas have cancellations

Nadi and Bhakoot dosha both carry classical exceptions — same Moon sign, shared sign lord, and others. A report that names the dosha and stops there has given you the alarming half of the tradition.

If you do not have both birth times.

Gun Milan needs the Moon's Nakshatra for both people. There is more than one way to get it.

Match by name

The Namakaran tradition names a child from the sound of the Nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at birth — so a traditionally given name carries the birth star inside it.

Check Mangal Dosha

Gun Milan does not include Manglik status. It is assessed separately, and it has its own set of cancellations.

Common Gun Milan questions

What is Gun Milan?

Gun Milan, or Ashtakoot Milan, is the traditional Vedic method of scoring marriage compatibility out of 36 points. It compares eight factors — called kootas — read from the Moon's Nakshatra and Rashi in both birth charts.

How many gun should match for marriage?

Eighteen out of 36 is the conventional minimum and 24 and above is treated as strong. Both are reference bands rather than rules. Which kootas produced the score matters more: Nadi alone is worth 8 points, so a high total with a zero in Nadi is read very differently from the same total with points spread evenly.

Are all 36 gun worth the same?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. The points run Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakut 7 and Nadi 8. The heaviest single koota is worth eight times the lightest.

What is Nadi dosha in Gun Milan?

When both partners share the same Nadi — Aadi, Madhya or Antya — the Nadi koota scores zero of eight and the combination is called Nadi dosha. The classical texts also list conditions that cancel it, such as the same Moon sign or the same Nakshatra with different padas.

Can Gun Milan be done without a birth time?

Yes, if the name was given in the traditional Namakaran ceremony, because the name then encodes the birth Nakshatra. Use the match by name tool for that. When the birth time is known, use it — it reads the actual Moon rather than the Moon the name implies.

Does a low Gun Milan score mean the marriage will fail?

No. Gun Milan scores a defined set of chart factors. It does not measure kindness, consent, shared values, financial habits or how two people handle conflict, and the tradition does not claim that it does.
