How the Ekadashi date is decided

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each paksha, and its day is decided at sunrise: the tithi running at sunrise names the day. Two cases need a rule, and this page states the one it uses. When Ekadashi is running at sunrise on two consecutive days, the fast is listed on the later one — the day Ekadashi is followed by Dwadashi, which is the day published Ekadashi calendars give and the one the Vaishnava rule requires; some Smarta households keep the earlier day, and the row names it. When Ekadashi touches no sunrise at all (kshaya), the fast is kept on the day it runs through. Each Ekadashi's name comes from its lunar month and paksha — Nirjala is Jyeshtha Shukla, Devshayani is Ashadha Shukla — and an adhika (extra) month carries a pair of its own, Padmini and Parama. Parana, breaking the fast, is on Dwadashi morning: the window shown is the first fifth of the daylight, closed early if Dwadashi ends inside it.

Ekadashi 2027 in other cities

The moment that decides the day — sunrise, the evening pradosh or moonrise — differs across India by well over an hour, so the day itself, not only the clock times, can differ between two cities on this list.

This table is recomputed for the city you pick. Those links are variants of this page: each carries a canonical back to the address above and asks search engines not to index it.

Ekadashi 2027: common questions

When is Ekadashi in 2027?

There are 25 in 2027 for London, all in the table above. The next: Sunday, 3 January 2027 — Saphala Ekadashi; parana 4 Jan, 08:05 to 09:41.

How many Ekadashis are there in 2027?

25 — 12 in Shukla paksha and 13 in Krishna paksha. The count moves between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year, and a year with an adhika month adds two more.

When does Chaturmas 2027 begin and end?

From Devshayani Ekadashi (Wednesday, 14 July 2027) to Dev Uthani Ekadashi (Tuesday, 9 November 2027). These are the months of Vishnu's rest, and weddings are traditionally held back until Dev Uthani.

When is Nirjala Ekadashi 2027?

Monday, 14 June 2027. It is the Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, kept without water.

When is the fast broken (parana)?

On Dwadashi morning, the tithi after Ekadashi. The window against each Ekadashi above is pratahkala — the first fifth of the daylight — closed early if Dwadashi ends inside it. Almanacs differ slightly on the window, which is why the rule is stated rather than only the time.

Why do some calendars give an Ekadashi a day earlier?

Because Ekadashi is at sunrise on two days on these dates: Sunday, 10 October 2027 and Monday, 11 October 2027. This page lists the later day, the one Dwadashi follows; some Smarta households keep the earlier. Both are named in the table.

Is Ekadashi on the same day everywhere in India?

Not always. The day is decided at sunrise, sunset or moonrise, and all three move with the city, so London and a city far to the west or east can disagree about the day itself. Switch city above and the whole table is recomputed.
