What Lagna Today Means

The lagna, or udaya lagna, is the sign of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon. Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in turn, and the one rising at any minute is the lagna of that minute. It is the first house of every chart cast for that moment — a birth, a question (prashna) or a muhurat — which is why almanacs print a lagna table for each day.

How the Lagna Changes Through the Day

The signs do not rise for two hours each. Because the zodiac is tilted against the equator, some signs rise steeply and quickly and others slowly and at a slant. Today in Goa Pisces rises fastest, in 1h 38m, and Scorpio slowest, in 2h 13m. The further from the equator, the larger that gap.

The whole table moves about four minutes earlier each day, which is why a lagna table is printed for one date and one place. The lagna at sunrise is the sign the Sun is in, give or take a sign, so the cycle starts with the Sun's sign.

Sthir Lagna Today (Fixed Signs)

Muhurat practice prefers a fixed (sthir) lagna — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius — for beginnings meant to last, such as a griha pravesh or an installation. Today's fixed-lagna windows in Goa:

  • Scorpio (Vrishchika): 09:16:39 to 11:29:27
  • Aquarius (Kumbha): 15:27:51 to 17:07:35
  • Taurus (Vrishabha): 20:31:25 to 22:32:45
  • Leo (Simha): 02:55:33 (9 Oct) to 05:00:33 (9 Oct)

A fixed lagna is one ingredient of a muhurat, not a muhurat by itself; the tithi, nakshatra and the day's inauspicious periods are read with it.

Lagna Table Accuracy

The rising sign is computed from the same ascendant function every kundli on this site uses, sampled every four minutes and resolved to the second at each change, with the sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri ayanamsa. Compared with the lagna tables AstroSage and Drik Panchang publish for New Delhi, the changes after sunrise agree within about a minute. AstroSage's times then drift steadily later, by about three minutes at the next dawn — the four minutes a day by which the sky outruns the clock — while Drik Panchang's stay within the minute.

Limits of the Lagna Table

A city's table is exact for its centre; across a large city the lagna changes a few seconds earlier or later. For a birth, use the birth place in the free kundli rather than the nearest city here, and treat a birth within a few minutes of a change as uncertain until the time is confirmed.

Lagna Today FAQ

Which lagna is rising today?

The result at the top of this page names the lagna rising now in the chosen city and when it ends; the table below it lists every lagna of the day from sunrise.

How long does one lagna last?

Between about one and a half and two and a half hours, depending on the sign and the latitude. Signs that rise at a slant take longer than those that rise steeply.

Why is the lagna different in another city?

The rising sign depends on the horizon, so it depends on longitude and latitude. The same clock time in two cities can have different lagnas.

What is a sthir lagna?

A fixed sign rising — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. Muhurat practice prefers it for lasting beginnings such as moving into a house.

Is the lagna at sunrise the same as the Sun sign?

Usually, because the Sun rises with its own sign. Near the start or end of a sign the lagna at sunrise can be the neighbouring sign.

Can I use this table to find my birth lagna?

Only roughly. The table is for a city centre today; a birth lagna needs the exact birth date, time and place, which the free kundli computes.
