How the Pradosh Vrat date is decided

Pradosh vrat is kept on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi, in both pakshas — but it is decided in the evening, not at sunrise. Pradosh kaal is the twilight after sunset; this page takes it as three muhurtas (2 hours 24 minutes) from sunset and asks whether Trayodashi is running at its midpoint. That is why a Pradosh often falls the day before Trayodashi reaches sunrise. When Trayodashi is running in pradosh on two evenings, the vrat is listed on the second, when it is in force from sunset; when it misses the midpoint on both, the vrat is kept on the evening it begins. Each Pradosh is named by its weekday; Som (Monday), Bhaum (Tuesday) and Shani (Saturday) Pradosh are the ones most often kept for their own sake. The puja window shown is pradosh kaal cut to the part in which Trayodashi actually runs, so it can be shorter than 2 hours 24 minutes.

Pradosh Vrat in other cities

The moment that decides the day — sunrise, the evening pradosh or moonrise — differs across India by well over an hour, so the day itself, not only the clock times, can differ between two cities on this list.

This table is recomputed for the city you pick. Those links are variants of this page: each carries a canonical back to the address above and asks search engines not to index it.

Pradosh Vrat: common questions

When is the next Pradosh Vrat?

Friday, 23 October 2026 — Shukra Pradosh; pradosh puja 18:04 to 20:28.

When is Som Pradosh?

Monday, 21 December 2026; Monday, 4 January 2027; Monday, 3 May 2027; Monday, 17 May 2027; Monday, 27 September 2027.

When is Shani Pradosh?

Saturday, 21 November 2026; Saturday, 5 December 2026; Saturday, 3 April 2027; Saturday, 17 April 2027; Saturday, 14 August 2027; Saturday, 28 August 2027.

What is pradosh kaal?

The twilight after sunset, taken here as three muhurtas (2 hours 24 minutes) from sunset. The vrat falls on the evening Trayodashi is running at its midpoint, and the puja window is the part of it in which Trayodashi actually runs.

Why is Pradosh often the day before Trayodashi?

Because Pradosh is decided in the evening, not at sunrise. Trayodashi often begins in the afternoon or evening, so it is running in that evening's pradosh while a sunrise panchang names the next day Trayodashi.

Is Pradosh Vrat on the same day everywhere in India?

Not always. The day is decided at sunrise, sunset or moonrise, and all three move with the city, so New York and a city far to the west or east can disagree about the day itself. Switch city above and the whole table is recomputed.
