Kanya Rashi name letters: To, Pa, Pee, Poo, Sha, Na, Tha, Pe, Po

A child born under Kanya Rashi is traditionally named on the sound of the single pada the Moon occupied at birth. The nine quarters in this sign are Uttara Phalguni padas 2-4, Hasta, Chitra padas 1-2.

  • Built pada by pada, including nakshatras that cross a sign boundary
  • Two attested regional readings are both shown where they occur
  • 300 cited names; every displayed meaning links to its source

Find the pada first, then use its sound.

The sign gives nine possible sounds. Birth time identifies the one pada; the baby name finder calculates it from the Moon's position.

Some sounds belong to more than one pada. Those rows name the other sign instead of pretending the spelling resolves the birth pada; birth time is what distinguishes it.

The calculation and its limits are documented once in the baby name finder method. Use the rashi calculator if the sign itself is uncertain.

Kanya Rashi name questions

Which letters are used for Kanya Rashi names?

To, Pa, Pee, Poo, Sha, Na, Tha, Pe, Po. Those are the sounds assigned to the nine padas that fall in Kanya — Uttara Phalguni padas 2-4, Hasta, Chitra padas 1-2 — in the Namakaran tradition. The tradition names on the sound of the single pada the Moon occupied at birth, so only one of these is 'yours'; the remaining quarters belong to the same sign but to a different part of it, and the birth time is what tells them apart.

Does the name have to start with one of these sounds?

No. This is a tradition, not a rule, and no text treats a name chosen for another reason as harmful. Families regularly name a child after a grandparent or a deity instead. The only consequence is that the name will not encode the birth star, so nobody will be able to read the chart back out of it later.

Why are only 300 sourced names shown for Kanya?

Every published meaning needs a citation and attestation as a given name. An uncited suggestion is omitted rather than given a plausible but invented gloss; the finder page explains the corpus and licence.
