Moon Phase Calculator
Enter a date, such as your birthday, to see the Moon's phase that day: its name, from new moon to full, how much of it was lit, its age in days and the tithi, the Hindu lunar day. Every value comes from the Swiss Ephemeris through the same engine as our panchang, with the exact new and full moons either side.

Moon Phase Calculator
- Phase, light and age, as our panchang computes them
- The tithi, with when it began and ended
- The exact full and new moons either side
Worked example, 15 August 1995, 10:30, New Delhi: Waning Gibbous, 77.4% lit, 19.4 days after the new moon; tithi Krishna Panchami (tithi 20 of 30).
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Phase | Waning Gibbous (waning) |
| Lit (illumination) | 77.4% |
| Moon's age | 19.4 days since the new moon |
| Sun-Moon angle (elongation) | 236.8° |
| Tithi at this moment | Krishna Panchami (tithi 20 of 30), from 14 August 1995, 16:52 to 15 August 1995, 17:00 |
| Tithi at sunrise (names the day) | Krishna Panchami (tithi 20 of 30), sunrise 05:49 |
| Moon's rashi and nakshatra | Meen (Pisces), Revati |
| Previous new moon | 27 July 1995, 20:42 |
| Previous full moon | 10 August 1995, 23:45 |
| Next new moon | 26 August 1995, 10:00 |
| Next full moon | 9 September 1995, 09:06 |
4 days 10 hours after the full moon of 10 August 1995, 23:45. A phase name covers about three and a half days around its exact moment, so the exact new and full moons are printed too.
Phase and tithi. Both measure the same thing, the angle between the Sun and the Moon: 236.8° here. The phase names it in eight parts of 45°; a tithi counts it in thirty parts of 12°, which is why the Hindu calendar can name every day of the month by its tithi.
Read at 10:30; in New Delhi, India (28.6139°N, 77.2090°E, Asia/Kolkata).
The calculator reads the Sun and the Moon for your date from the Swiss Ephemeris, the same tables our panchang uses, and measures the angle between them (the elongation). That one angle gives everything else: the share of the Moon that is lit is (1 − cos angle) ÷ 2, the Moon's age is the angle as a fraction of the 29.53-day lunar month, and the tithi is the angle counted in steps of 12°.
It then searches either side for the exact new moon (0°) and full moon (180°), so you can see how close the date was to either. Without a time the Moon is read at noon; the tithi can change during a day, and the table says when the running tithi began and ends.
| Phase | Sun-Moon angle | Tithis | In the sky |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Moon | 337.5° to 22.5° | Krishna Chaturdashi to Shukla Dwitiya | Not visible: the Moon is beside the Sun |
| Waxing Crescent | 22.5° to 67.5° | Shukla Dwitiya to Shashti | A thin curve in the west after sunset |
| First Quarter | 67.5° to 112.5° | Shukla Shashti to Dashami | Half lit, high in the sky at sunset |
| Waxing Gibbous | 112.5° to 157.5° | Shukla Dashami to Chaturdashi | More than half lit, rising in the afternoon |
| Full Moon | 157.5° to 202.5° | Shukla Chaturdashi to Krishna Dwitiya | Fully lit, rising around sunset |
| Waning Gibbous | 202.5° to 247.5° | Krishna Dwitiya to Shashti | Rises after sunset, still up at dawn |
| Last Quarter | 247.5° to 292.5° | Krishna Shashti to Dashami | Half lit, rising around midnight |
| Waning Crescent | 292.5° to 337.5° | Krishna Dashami to Chaturdashi | A thin curve in the east before dawn |
The Hindu lunar month is the same cycle counted more finely. The waxing half, from new moon to full, is Shukla paksha (tithis 1 to 15, ending at Purnima); the waning half is Krishna paksha (tithis 16 to 30, ending at Amavasya). A panchang names each day by the tithi running at sunrise, which is why the table shows that one separately: today's tithi works the same way.
Vedic astrology reads the Moon's paksha at birth as part of the chart: a birth in Shukla paksha with a bright Moon is traditionally counted a strength for the Moon. The rest of the reading needs the full panchang at birth.

Moon Phase Calculator FAQ
How do I find the moon phase on my birthday?
Enter your date of birth. The calculator gives the phase, how much of the Moon was lit, its age in days and the tithi, with the exact new and full moons either side. Add the birth time for the precise moment.
What is the difference between a moon phase and a tithi?
Both measure the angle between the Sun and the Moon. A phase divides the month into eight named parts; a tithi divides it into thirty lunar days of 12° each, which the Hindu calendar uses.
Why does the tithi on this page differ from my calendar's?
A calendar names a day by the tithi at sunrise, while the tithi can change during the day. The table shows both: the tithi at your moment and the one at that day's sunrise.
Was I born on a full moon?
Look at the exact full moon in the table. If it falls within about a day of your birth, the Moon was full or nearly so; the illumination shows how close.
Is the Moon's phase at birth important in Vedic astrology?
It is one factor. A bright waxing Moon is traditionally counted a strength for the Moon, which is read for the mind and emotions; the Moon's sign, nakshatra and house matter as much.
Do I need a birth place?
Only for the clock and the sunrise. Without one the calculator works in India time at New Delhi and says so under the result.
