Mundan Muhurat rules used on this page

  • Where these rules come from: the chudakarana rules of the muhurta texts as the largest computed mundan list applies them. That list was checked for New Delhi across 2026 and 2027, and every date it prints is on this page.
  • Month: Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Magha and Phalguna, counted new moon to new moon (amanta). Ashadha only until Devshayani Ekadashi begins (24 July 2026, 09:28), when Chaturmas starts. Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, Kartika, Margashirsha and Pausha are closed, and so is any adhika month.
  • Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (the Vedic weekday, which changes at sunrise). Never Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday.
  • Nakshatra: the Moon in one of these 10 — Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha.
  • Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi of either fortnight, and Purnima. Never Pratipada, Chaturthi, Shashti, Ashtami, Navami, Dwadashi, Chaturdashi or Amavasya.
  • An adhika month is closed: Adhika Jyeshtha, an adhika month, runs from 17 May 2026 to 15 June 2026.
  • Age — guidance, not computed: many families hold the first mundan in an odd year of the child's life (the first, third or fifth), and many follow a family or temple custom instead. Settle the year by custom; this list then gives the day.
  • Jyeshtha: permitted, but many families avoid it for an eldest child, so Jyeshtha rows are marked. Some families also avoid Friday for a girl's mundan.
  • Kharmas and asta: neither is a rule in the computed mundan list this page was checked against, so neither removes a date here. Dates inside Kharmas (16 December 2025 – 14 January 2026, 15 March 2026 – 14 April 2026 and 16 December 2026 – 14 January 2027) are marked, because many families wait for it to end.
  • The day: sunrise to the next sunrise, for Kathmandu. A day any closed period touches is left out whole; inside the days that remain, the muhurat is the time when every condition above holds at once, for at least 20 minutes.
  • Not checked here: the child's own chart — Chandra bala and Tara bala from the birth nakshatra — and the lagna. A priest checks these against the child's birth details.

Why other calendars show different dates

  • More windows, not other ones. Every date the largest computed mundan list prints for New Delhi is here. This page also keeps windows that open late at night or before dawn, which that list mostly leaves out; most families hold a mundan in daylight anyway, so read those as the panchang allowing it, not as a recommendation.
  • Hasta. Some written rules name Hasta among the mundan nakshatras, but the computed list never opens a window in it, and neither does this page.
  • Amanta months. The months are counted new moon to new moon. Counted full moon to full moon, the dark half of Pausha would be called Magha and some January dates would open; the reference list keeps them closed, and so does this page.
  • The child's chart. A priest may move a date for Chandra bala, Tara bala or the lagna, which only the child's birth details can decide.
  • The city. The day starts at sunrise, so a window near dawn can fall on a different date in another city.

Muhurat for another city

The day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, and sunrise differs across India by well over an hour — so a window near dawn can belong to a different date in another city, and every clock time moves.

These links recompute the list for the city you pick. They are variants of this page: each carries a canonical back to the address above and asks search engines not to index it.

Common questions

How many mundan muhurat dates are there in 2026?

37. By month: January 4, February 7, March 5, April 7, May 6, June 3, July 5. None in August, September, October, November and December.

Is there any mundan muhurat left in 2026?

No — the last was Monday, 20 July 2026. The next is Monday, 8 February 2027.

Which months of 2026 have no mundan muhurat?

August, September, October, November and December — Chaturmas runs from 24 July 2026 to 20 November 2026, Shravana (12 August 2026 to 11 September 2026) is not a mundan month, Bhadrapada (11 September 2026 to 10 October 2026) is not a mundan month, Ashwin (10 October 2026 to 9 November 2026) is not a mundan month, Kartika (9 November 2026 to 9 December 2026) is not a mundan month and Margashirsha (9 December 2026 to 8 January 2027) is not a mundan month.

At what age is mundan done?

Most families hold the first mundan in an odd year of the child's life — the first, third or fifth — and many follow a family or temple custom instead. The age is decided by custom; the panchang decides the day.

Can mundan be done in Kharmas or Chaturmas?

Not in Chaturmas: it closes Ashadha from Devshayani Ekadashi, and the months after it, Shravana to Pausha, are not mundan months at all. Kharmas is not a rule in the computed list this page follows, so its dates stay, marked — 7 of the 2026 dates fall in it.

Why are Jyeshtha dates marked?

Jyeshtha is a mundan month, but many families avoid it for an eldest child. The rows are marked so those families can skip them.

Why does another panchang show different dates?

Each difference is set out above under 'Why other calendars show different dates' — which rules differ, and which windows this list keeps that others leave out.
