A sankranti is an instant: the Sun crossing from one sidereal sign into the next, computed here with the Lahiri ayanamsa and bisected to the second. Each row is dated by the day that instant falls on in India, as AstroSage's list is. Makar and Mesha Sankranti, kept as festivals, follow the punya-kaal rule: when the Sun crosses after sunset the festival is kept the next day. Regional solar calendars apply their own day rules — the Tamil month begins by a sunset rule, the Malayalam by an afternoon one, and Telugu almanacs keep Makara Sankranti the next day when the ingress is past midday — so a regional date can differ by a day.
