Two calendars
Why Sawan has two start dates
A Hindu month is counted either full moon to full moon (purnimanta, the North) or new moon to new moon (amanta, the West and South). The dark fortnight that opens Sawan in the North is still Ashadha to an amanta reader, so the two calendars start Shravana about fifteen days apart and share its bright fortnight — Nag Panchami, Shravana Putrada Ekadashi and Raksha Bandhan fall on the same days in both. Neither is wrong; each is the calendar of its region.
