The short answer: windows, not a date

Vedic astrology answers "when will I get married?" with periods of a year or two in which marriage is more likely, never with a single date. It does this in three layers, and each one narrows the one before it:

  1. The promise. The birth chart shows how strongly marriage is indicated and what kind of partnership it describes: the 7th house, its lord, Venus, Jupiter and the Darakaraka.
  2. The period. The Vimshottari dasha shows when those factors are "switched on", usually through a mahadasha and antardasha linked to them.
  3. The trigger. Transits, above all Jupiter and Saturn together, show which part of that period is most active.

Even when all three line up, the chart describes a season, not an obligation. People marry outside their strongest windows and stay single through them. Readiness, family, money, law and plain choice decide the actual date. A good reading helps you understand the timing; it does not take the decision away from you.

Astrology gives windows for marriage, not a date.

Step 1: Read the 7th house and its lord

The 7th house of the birth chart is the house of marriage, the spouse and committed partnership. Astrologers read four things about it:

  • The 7th lord, the planet that rules the sign on the 7th house. Its sign, house and strength describe how the theme of partnership plays out.
  • Planets in the 7th house, which colour the partnership directly.
  • Planets that aspect the 7th house, such as Jupiter's helpful aspect or Saturn's slowing one.
  • Supporting houses. The 2nd house (family, a new member joining it) and the 11th house (fulfilment of wishes) are read with the 7th for marriage.

The Navamsa (D9) chart, the ninth divisional chart, is read alongside as the confirming chart for marriage. A promise that shows in both the birth chart and the D9 is taken more seriously. The 7th house guide covers the house in detail, and a free Kundli shows yours.

Step 2: Venus, Jupiter and the Darakaraka

Three planets act as significators of marriage in Vedic astrology, whatever houses they rule.

  • Venus is the natural significator (karaka) of marriage, love and the spouse in every chart. A strong, well-placed Venus is read as supporting marriage; an afflicted Venus as making it harder work.
  • Jupiter is the significator of the husband in a woman's chart in the classical texts, and of blessing and expansion in general. Many astrologers today read both Venus and Jupiter in every chart.
  • The Darakaraka is Jaimini's spouse significator: the planet with the lowest degree in its sign. It changes from chart to chart. The Darakaraka guide explains how to find it.

The point of this step is not to label a planet good or bad. It is to know which planets carry the marriage theme in your chart, because those are the planets whose periods you will look for next.

Step 3: Find the dasha that can deliver marriage

In Vimshottari dasha, the mahadasha sets the chapter of life and the antardasha inside it usually acts as the trigger. Marriage most often falls in an antardasha of a planet connected with it, inside a mahadasha that does not oppose it. The usual candidates are:

  • the 7th lord, and planets placed in or aspecting the 7th house;
  • Venus, and Jupiter;
  • the Darakaraka;
  • the lords of the 2nd and 11th houses;
  • Rahu or Ketu, when they sit in the 7th house or with its lord, since the nodes give the results of their house and sign.

Most charts have several candidate periods across a lifetime. An astrologer narrows them to the ones that fall at a realistic age and that the D9 supports. The dasha calculator lists your mahadashas and antardashas with their dates, so you can see which planet's period you are in and which comes next.

Step 4: Check the Jupiter–Saturn double transit

The final filter is transit, or gochar. The rule most used today is the double transit: an event of a house tends to happen when Jupiter and Saturn, by transit, both influence that house or its lord at the same time, by occupying it or aspecting it. For marriage, the house is the 7th, and many astrologers also check the 7th from the Moon.

  • Jupiter stays in a sign for about a year and aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself.
  • Saturn stays for about two and a half years and aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th signs from itself.

Because Jupiter moves faster, the double transit forms and dissolves every few years. It is a filter, not a cause: it narrows a dasha window that is already open, and it does nothing on its own. This rule was popularised in modern times by the astrologer K. N. Rao; it is not stated in this form in BPHS. The Jupiter transit and Saturn transit pages show where both are now.

Delays in the chart, and what they do not mean

Some placements are traditionally read as delaying marriage or making it more complicated:

  • Saturn in the 7th house, aspecting it, or joined with Venus or the 7th lord;
  • the 7th lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house;
  • Rahu and Ketu across the 1st and 7th houses;
  • Mars in certain houses, the rule known as Manglik dosha.

Delay is not denial. A placement linked with a later marriage often describes a marriage that is chosen more carefully and lasts longer, and in an age when many people marry later anyway, "late" in an old text is not a reason to panic. Manglik dosha has its own exceptions and cancellations, covered in the Manglik guide. Be wary of anyone who sells an expensive ritual to "remove" a delay. No classical text promises that a remedy fixes a date.

Why a marriage age calculator by date of birth cannot work

Many sites offer a "marriage age calculator" or a free marriage prediction from the date of birth alone. A date is not enough. The 7th house is counted from the lagna, the sign rising at the moment of birth, and the lagna changes about every two hours. Without the birth time and place, nobody can know which sign is on your 7th house, which planet rules it, or where the house lords fall.

A date alone fixes the slow planets' signs and, on most days, the Moon's sign. A calculator that turns that into a marriage age is using a shortcut, not your chart. If your birth time is unknown, say so, and treat any house-based reading as provisional.

How to find your own marriage windows

  1. Make your chart. Enter your date, time and place in the free Kundli and note your lagna, 7th lord, Venus and Jupiter.
  2. Ask the free chat. In the astrology chat, ask "when will I get married?" (or "shadi kab hogi"). It lists the coming Vimshottari periods in the next five years in which your 7th lord, Venus, Jupiter or Darakaraka is active, ranked by a Navamsa check, with every date calculated from your chart.
  3. Read the full partnership picture. The Marriage Report reads the 7th house, its lord, occupants and aspects, the D9, the Darakaraka, the Upapada Lagna and the Manglik check, with the dasha dates of your marriage significators.
  4. Comparing two people? That is a different question. Kundli matching scores the two charts together.

Frequently asked questions about marriage timing in astrology

Can astrology tell the exact date of my marriage?

No. Vedic astrology gives windows of a year or two in which marriage is more likely, from the dasha and transits. The actual date depends on the people involved and their choices.

Is there a free marriage prediction by date of birth?

A date alone is not enough, because the 7th house depends on the lagna, which needs the birth time and place. With all three, the free marriage-timing calculator shows your chart's marriage windows and the double transit.

Which dasha is best for marriage?

There is no single best dasha for everyone. The periods that matter are those of the planets linked with marriage in your chart: the 7th lord, Venus, Jupiter, the Darakaraka and planets in or aspecting the 7th house.

Does Saturn always delay marriage?

No. Saturn linked to the 7th house or Venus is read as a later or more serious commitment, not as denial, and its influence depends on the rest of the chart. Many such marriages are described as stable and lasting.

Can remedies bring marriage sooner?

No classical text promises that a remedy fixes a date. Traditional practices such as prayer and charity may bring calm and focus, but be wary of anyone selling an expensive ritual on the strength of fear.

What does the double transit mean for marriage?

It is a modern timing rule: marriage is more likely when Jupiter and Saturn both influence the 7th house or its lord by transit, inside a supportive dasha period. It narrows a window; it does not cause an event.
