Gajakesari Yoga Calculator

Date, exact time and birth place. The Gajakesari Yoga is computed on the server from these three values and nothing is stored.

Enter the town you were born in, not the nearest big city. Birth coordinates set the ascendant and every division on this page is cut from it, so a place an hour away moves the Gajakesari Yoga as surely as a wrong time does.

Your details are used to compute this result and are not saved. They are sent in the body of the request, never in the page address, and the page worked out from them is never cached or indexed, so nobody else receives your chart.

The sixteen vargas are one system and are read together. Every chart below is computed by the same engine from the same birth moment, so a placement checked on one page is the placement the next page is reading.

Dhan Yoga Calculator

Dhana means wealth, and the classical Dhana Yoga is a link between the lord of the second house — what is accumulated — and the lord of the eleventh — what comes in.

Panch Mahapurusha Yoga Calculator

Five yogas, one for each of the five non-luminous planets, each formed the same way: the planet in its own sign or exalted, in an angle from the ascendant.

Vargottama Calculator

Vargottama means best in division: a planet occupying the same sign in the birth chart and in a divisional chart.

Kundli Yoga Calculator

One pass, every named yoga the engine detects, each reported as present or absent with the classical rule it was tested against.

Arudha Lagna Calculator

The Arudha Lagna is the image of the first house: not who a person is, but what they look like to everyone else.

Hora Chart Calculator (D2)

The Hora chart cuts every sign in half and sorts the whole horoscope into two boxes only: the Sun's Hora and the Moon's Hora.

The full birth chart these divisions are cut from is at Free Kundli, and the Vimshottari periods they are read alongside are at Year Ahead.

Worked Gajakesari Yoga Interpretation - 12 April 1990, 10:30, New Delhi

Computed for 12 April 1990, 10:30, New Delhi, from a Gemini ascendant. 5 combinations were tested and 0 were found: none of them. Absent combinations are listed too, so that you can tell a chart with none from a check that ran incompletely.

Gajakesari is the elephant-and-lion yoga: Jupiter standing at an angle from the Moon. It is one of the most cited combinations in Vedic astrology and one of the most loosely defined, so this page says which version it tests before it tells you the answer.

What the Gajakesari Yoga Means in a Kundli

The name joins gaja, the elephant, and kesari, the lion — a combination of weight and command. The yoga is formed when Jupiter occupies a kendra from the Moon: the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house counted from wherever the Moon sits. Jupiter is wisdom and expansion, the Moon is the mind, and an angular relationship between them describes a mind with judgement structurally available to it.

The definitions genuinely differ between texts, and this matters more than most sites admit. Phaladeepika's sixth chapter gives the simple angular version. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's treatment adds qualifications about Jupiter's dignity and about benefic aspect that a house-only check cannot evaluate. Some modern practitioners require Jupiter to be free of combustion and debilitation as well.

This calculator tests the Phaladeepika geometry: Jupiter in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the Moon, counted by house. That is what the engine detects and it is stated in the detector's own description. The stricter qualifications are not applied, and this page does not pretend they are — which means a positive result here is a geometric fact and not a certificate.

Combinations Checked Alongside the Gajakesari Yoga

Chandra-Adhi Yoga

Benefics — Mercury, Venus or Jupiter — in the 6th, 7th or 8th from the Moon. Read for protection and a steady rise. The engine requires at least two of the three benefics.

Sunapha Yoga

A planet other than the Sun and the nodes in the 2nd from the Moon. Read for self-generated resources and intelligence, with the forming planets named in the result.

Anapha Yoga

The same arrangement in the 12th from the Moon. Read traditionally for personality, virtue and vitality — and explicitly not, in this engine's own wording, as any claim about health.

Durudhara Yoga

Planets in both the 2nd and the 12th from the Moon at once — the Moon flanked on both sides. The strongest of the lunar yogas in Phaladeepika, and the reason the absence of both is given its own name, Kemdrum.

House Lords Behind the Gajakesari Yoga Check

The combinations above were tested against a Gemini ascendant, and that single fact decides every one of them. A yoga defined by the second and eleventh lords is a statement about two specific planets, and which two depends entirely on which sign was rising. Change the ascendant and you change the lords, the categories they belong to, and therefore the answer.

The categories are the vocabulary the whole yoga literature is written in. Kendras — the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — are the pillars: the houses that hold a chart up. Trikonas — the 1st, 5th and 9th — are the sources of fortune and merit. A Raja Yoga is a link between a lord of one group and a lord of the other, and that is the whole definition. Dusthanas — the 6th, 8th and 12th — are the houses of difficulty, and a lord of a dusthana placed in another dusthana is the Viparita reversal. Upachayas — the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th — are the houses that improve with time, which is why malefics there are read differently from malefics anywhere else.

The first house belongs to two categories at once, being both a kendra and a trikona, and that is not a bookkeeping accident: it is why the ascendant lord is the single most important planet in a Parashari reading, and why a yoga involving it carries more weight than the same structure built from any other pair.

The occupants column is there because a house lord and a house occupant are different things and are constantly confused. A planet sitting in the tenth house is not the tenth lord unless it also rules the sign there. Most yoga definitions are about lords; a few — Budha-Aditya, Chandra-Mangal, the Mahapurusha set — are about occupants. The table gives you both so a definition can be checked rather than taken on trust.

How to Read a Gajakesari Yoga Result

  1. Confirm the geometry, then confirm Jupiter The check is Jupiter's house counted from the Moon. Having confirmed it, look at Jupiter itself: its sign, its dignity, whether it is combust. A geometrically present yoga carried by a debilitated combust Jupiter is not what the texts are describing.
  2. Read the Moon's own condition Half the yoga is lunar. A Moon that is waning, hemmed by malefics, or in a difficult house carries the combination differently from a bright well-placed one, and no house count captures that.
  3. Check the four other lunar yogas alongside it Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara describe what stands beside the Moon, and Chandra-Adhi what supports it from the difficult houses. Together they are a fuller picture of the lunar situation than Gajakesari alone, and this page reports all five for that reason.
  4. Look for Kemdrum before celebrating anything The absence of planets on both sides of the Moon is Kemdrum, the one lunar configuration the tradition treats as a difficulty. It is checked on the combined yoga page and is the necessary counterweight to a Gajakesari reading.
  5. Verify it in the Navamsa A yoga present in the birth chart and dissolved in the D9 is the classical picture of a combination that does not hold. The Navamsa calculator on this site computes the same chart the check would need.

Detection Method Behind the Gajakesari Yoga Result

Every combination reported above is produced by a named detector in this site's astrology engine, not by a language model and not by a lookup table of pre-written paragraphs. A detector takes the planet-to-house map, the planet-to-sign map and the ascendant, applies one classical condition, and returns three things: whether the condition held, a strength between zero and one, and the rule it applied. All three are printed.

Strength is not a score. It reflects how firmly that detector's own condition was met — how many qualifying conjunctions were found, how many of the three benefics participated, how many debilitations were cancelled. It is calibrated per detector and is not a common currency, so adding the column up produces a number that means nothing. It exists so that a marginal case can be told from an emphatic one, and for no other purpose.

Absent combinations are printed. A calculator that lists only what it found leaves a reader unable to distinguish a chart with no yogas from a check that ran incompletely, and the omission always flatters. Every page here reports the number tested alongside the number found, and both numbers come from the same list.

What is not checked is named rather than hidden. This engine has no detector for Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga — the ninth and tenth lords in conjunction or mutual aspect — so no page here claims to test it. It has none for Kaal Sarp Dosha either. Both are well-known enough that their absence looks like an oversight, which is precisely why it is stated: a row that silently reports 'not present' for a condition nothing evaluated is a lie a reader cannot detect.

The Pancha Mahapurusha set is assembled in exactly one place in the engine. It used to be detected in two modules at once, so three of the five came back twice in a single chart and Saturn's came back under two different spellings — which inflated both the count of yogas a chart carried and the scores derived from it. The count this page reports is a real count.

Birth-Time Sensitivity of a Gajakesari Yoga Check

Almost every combination on this page is defined by house position or by house rulership, and houses are the part of a chart that moves fastest. The ascendant travels through all twelve signs every twenty-four hours — roughly one sign every two hours, and roughly one degree every four minutes — so an hour's error in a recorded birth time routinely changes the rising sign. Change the rising sign and every house lord changes with it, which changes most of the table above.

The planets themselves are far steadier. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, the Sun about every month, and Jupiter and Saturn are fixed across a whole day. So a combination defined purely by two planets sharing a sign survives a rough birth time, and one defined by houses does not. Where a result on this page depends on a house, treat it as provisional unless your birth time is recorded to the minute.

Every reading here assumes a rectified birth time. The same caution applies with more force to the divisional charts a combination should be checked against: beyond the D9 they are highly birth-time sensitive, and the D60 changes ascendant about every two minutes.

Why the Birth Place Changes the Gajakesari Yoga

The ascendant is not a property of the instant alone. It is the point of the ecliptic rising over a particular horizon, so it is a function of the moment and of the coordinate together, and the two trade off exactly: the sky turns one degree every four minutes, and one degree of longitude is four minutes of local time. Moving one degree of longitude — about 103 km east or west at Indian latitudes — moves the ascendant a degree, and 3096 km moves it a whole sign. A different rising sign means different house lords, and every combination on this page is a statement about house lords.

Latitude matters separately and less obviously. It does not shift the clock, it changes how fast each sign climbs — the ascensional difference — so two places on the same meridian and the same instant still rise different degrees, and the gap grows the further from the equator you are. This is why a chart cast for a state capital is not a rounding of a chart cast for a village two districts away; it is a different chart that happens to look plausible.

So enter the town you were actually born in. The place search above accepts any village, town or city a geocoder knows, not a shortlist of metros, and it prints the latitude, longitude and timezone it used above the result so you can check them against a map. Since one whole sign of the ascendant is the unit this page is built from, a birth place picked for convenience damages the result in the same way and by the same mechanism as a birth time rounded to the nearest quarter hour.

Limits of the Gajakesari Yoga

Gajakesari is common. Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon in roughly one chart in three, because four of the twelve houses qualify. A combination present in a third of all charts cannot distinguish anybody, and readings that treat it as a mark of greatness are describing an average.

A positive result here is a house-geometry fact only. Jupiter's dignity, its combustion, and the benefic aspects the fuller classical versions require are not tested, so a positive result under this check can be a negative one under a stricter reading.

The yoga does not promise wealth, fame, wisdom or a long life, and its absence takes none of them away. It describes a structural relationship between the Moon and Jupiter in a chart.

Two limits apply to every page in this family and are worth stating in one place. Divisional charts beyond the D9 are highly birth-time sensitive, and every reading here assumes a rectified birth time. And nothing on this site is medical, legal or financial advice: a chart is a traditional interpretive framework, not a diagnosis, not a forecast, and never a reason to delay professional help.

The Gajakesari Yoga and the Divisional Charts

A combination found in the birth chart is a first reading, not a finished one. The classical instruction is to test it against the divisional charts, and above all against the Navamsa: a yoga formed by planets that hold their dignity in the D9 is described very differently from one formed by planets that collapse there. That cross-check is the single most useful thing a reader can do with a positive result, and almost no calculator performs it.

The sixteen vargas are Parashara's Shodashavarga, and the weighting between them — Vimshopaka Bala — puts the D1, D9 and D60 highest. Every one of them is computed on this site from the classical start-sign rules rather than the cyclic shortcut that collapses the D12 and D60 into Aries. The Navamsa calculator is the one to run next after a gajakesari yoga check; the Shashtiamsa calculator is the final dignity test, and it needs a birth time good to the minute.

Timing is a separate system again. A natal combination is a standing feature of a chart with no dates in it; when it expresses is a Vimshottari Dasha question, read from the periods of the planets that form it. Any tool that produces a date from a natal yoga has generated a sentence rather than read a chart.

Gajakesari Yoga Calculator - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gajakesari Yoga?

Jupiter occupying an angle from the Moon — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house counted from wherever the Moon sits. The name joins the elephant and the lion, and the combination is read as a mind with judgement structurally available to it.

Is Gajakesari Yoga rare?

No. Four of twelve houses qualify, so it occurs in roughly a third of all charts. Any reading that treats it as a distinguishing mark is treating an average as an exception.

Which definition does this calculator use?

The Phaladeepika geometry: Jupiter in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the Moon. The stricter Parashari version adds dignity and aspect qualifications that a house-only check cannot evaluate, and this page says so rather than implying they were tested.

Does Gajakesari Yoga guarantee wealth or fame?

No. It is a structural relationship between two bodies in a chart. The classical results are written in the elevated register those texts use throughout, and reading them as guarantees is a category error the texts themselves do not make.

What cancels Gajakesari Yoga?

Traditional practice holds that a debilitated, combust or badly afflicted Jupiter does not deliver the combination even when the geometry is present. This page reports the geometry and names the limit rather than issuing a cancellation verdict it cannot compute.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes. The check counts houses from the Moon, and houses depend on the ascendant, which moves through the whole circle every day. An hour's error can move both the Moon's house and Jupiter's and change the answer.
