KP astrology calculator

Enter your date, exact time and place of birth. The calculator draws your KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) chart: the twelve Placidus cusps and the nine grahas, each with its sign lord, star lord and sub-lord, the four levels of significators for every house, and the ruling planets of the moment you ask.

Your birth details

Date, exact time and place of birth: in KP a few minutes can change a cusp's sub-lord.

Your details are used to compute this result and are not saved. They are sent in the body of the request, never in the page address, and the page worked out from them is never cached or indexed, so nobody else receives your chart.

KP Astrology Calculator

  • Twelve Placidus cusps and nine grahas, to the arc-minute
  • Sign lord, star lord, sub-lord and sub-sub-lord of each
  • Every house's significators, strongest level first
  • The ruling planets of this moment, with the Vedic day

KP judges each matter by the sub-lord of its house cusp. Each nakshatra is split into nine unequal subs in the proportions of the Vimshottari years, so every degree of the zodiac has a sign lord, a star lord and a sub-lord, and a planet's results come through the houses its star lord signifies.

Worked example (15 August 1990, 10:30, New Delhi): Your lagna (cusp 1) is at 28°43′ Virgo, in Chitra: sign lord Mercury, star lord Mars, sub-lord Saturn. The 7th cusp's sub-lord is Saturn and the 10th cusp's is Moon.

KP's rule: a matter is promised when the sub-lord of its cusp signifies one of the houses KP reads for it, and its timing falls in the dasha and bhukti of planets that signify the same houses. This table applies the first half of the rule to three cusps; it is a reading of the chart, not a guarantee of any event.

The ruling planets belong to the moment of judgement, not to your birth: these are for the moment this page was worked out. The day is the Vedic day, which turns at sunrise (Monday, lord Moon). Once each, they are Moon, Saturn, Mars, Venus, Rahu. Rahu or Ketu joins them when it sits in a sign one of them rules: here Rahu.

How the KP chart is made

  1. Positions. The nine grahas and the rising degree for your birth moment, in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa).
  2. Cusps. The twelve house cusps by the Placidus system, which divides the sky by time, so houses differ in size. Cusp 1 is the rising degree and cusp 10 the meridian.
  3. Lords. Each cusp and graha gets its sign lord, its star lord (the nakshatra's Vimshottari lord) and its sub-lord, the lord of the ninth-part of the nakshatra it falls in; the sub is divided once more for the sub-sub-lord.
  4. Houses. A graha sits in the house whose cusp it has passed and whose next cusp it has not reached, which can differ from its whole-sign house in a Vedic kundli.
  5. Significators. For each house, the four levels in order of strength; for each graha, the houses its star lord occupies and owns and the houses it occupies and owns itself.

Reading a cusp sub-lord

Find the cusp of the matter (the 7th for marriage, the 10th for career, the 5th for children). Note its sub-lord, then the houses that sub-lord signifies in the table of grahas. KP reads the matter as promised when those houses include the ones it needs, and times it to the dasha and bhukti of planets that signify the same houses. The dasha calculator gives those periods with dates.

KP astrology calculator — questions

What is a KP chart?

A KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) chart is a birth chart drawn with Placidus house cusps, in which every cusp and planet is given three lords: the lord of its sign, the lord of its nakshatra (the star lord) and the lord of its sub, one of nine unequal parts of the nakshatra. KP judges each matter by the sub-lord of the relevant cusp.

How is the sub-lord calculated?

Each nakshatra of 13°20′ is divided into nine parts in the proportions of the Vimshottari dasha years, starting from the nakshatra's own lord and following the order Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. The part a degree falls in is its sub, and that part's lord is the sub-lord.

What are significators in KP?

The planets that can deliver a house's results. From strongest to weakest: planets in the nakshatra of an occupant of the house, the occupants, planets in the nakshatra of the house's owner, and the owner, which is the lord of the sign on the cusp.

What are ruling planets?

The planets that rule the moment of judgement: the sign and star lords of the rising degree, the sign and star lords of the Moon, and the lord of the weekday. KP uses them to choose between candidate periods, to rectify a birth time and to answer horary questions. They change through the day.

Which ayanamsa does this calculator use?

Lahiri, the ayanamsa used for every chart on this site. KP software usually uses Krishnamurti's own ayanamsa, a few minutes of arc away, so a cusp or planet sitting right at the edge of a sub can show a different sub-lord there.

Why does KP need an exact birth time?

The cusps move about one degree every four minutes and a sub can be less than a degree wide, so an error of a few minutes can change a cusp's sub-lord. KP astrologers often rectify the birth time with the ruling planets before they predict anything.
