Kitchen · the Agni corner
Kitchen Vastu
Vastu's first choice for a kitchen is the Southeast — the corner of Agni, the fire. Below: how the tradition reads a kitchen in each of the eight directions, where the stove, sink and fridge go, and what to do about a kitchen in the north-east.
- Directions from the app's Vastu room rules
- Stove, sink and fridge
- No costly rebuilds

Directions are read from the centre of the home (the brahmasthan) against true north. To find your kitchen's, stand at the centre of the home and take a compass reading towards it.

Stove, Sink and Fridge Inside the Kitchen
- The stove in the south-east corner of the kitchen, and in many households the cook facing east.
- The sink and water away from the stove — the tradition keeps fire and water apart, and so does good kitchen safety.
- For the fridge the tradition prefers the Southwest, South and West and avoids the Northeast, Southeast and Centre (Brahmasthan).
- A way out for smoke and heat — a window or a chimney — matters more than any direction.
If Your Kitchen Is in the North-East
A north-east kitchen is among the tradition's strongest objections, because that corner is read as water and the spirit. It is not a diagnosis or a prediction. Do not move gas, water or drain lines for a direction alone. Put ventilation, stove clearance, cleanliness and safe working space right first, and leave bigger changes for a renovation you were doing anyway.
Vastu is a traditional framework for arranging a home, not a guarantee of health, wealth or any outcome. Never change the structure of a building on a direction alone; ask a qualified engineer.
Questions people ask
Which direction is best for a kitchen as per Vastu?
The tradition's first choice is the Southeast, the corner of Agni, the fire. The Northwest and East are acceptable; the Northeast and Southwest are avoided.
Which direction should you face while cooking?
Many households prefer to cook facing east, with the stove in the south-east corner of the kitchen. Where that is not possible, ventilation and a safe working space matter more.
Is a north-east kitchen bad?
The tradition counts it among its strongest objections, but it does not diagnose or predict anything. Do not move gas, water or drain lines for a direction alone; check ventilation, stove clearance and cleanliness first.
Where should the sink and fridge go?
Keep the stove and the sink apart — fire and water separate. For the fridge the tradition prefers the Southwest, South and West and avoids the Northeast, Southeast and Centre (Brahmasthan).
