Raj Yoga Calculator

Date, exact time and birth place. The Raj Yoga is computed on the server from these three values and nothing is stored.

Enter the town you were born in, not the nearest big city. Birth coordinates set the ascendant and every division on this page is cut from it, so a place an hour away moves the Raj Yoga as surely as a wrong time does.

Your details are used to compute this result and are not saved. They are sent in the body of the request, never in the page address, and the page worked out from them is never cached or indexed, so nobody else receives your chart.

The sixteen vargas are one system and are read together. Every chart below is computed by the same engine from the same birth moment, so a placement checked on one page is the placement the next page is reading.

Dhan Yoga Calculator

Dhana means wealth, and the classical Dhana Yoga is a link between the lord of the second house — what is accumulated — and the lord of the eleventh — what comes in.

Panch Mahapurusha Yoga Calculator

Five yogas, one for each of the five non-luminous planets, each formed the same way: the planet in its own sign or exalted, in an angle from the ascendant.

Vargottama Calculator

Vargottama means best in division: a planet occupying the same sign in the birth chart and in a divisional chart.

Kundli Yoga Calculator

One pass, every named yoga the engine detects, each reported as present or absent with the classical rule it was tested against.

Arudha Lagna Calculator

The Arudha Lagna is the image of the first house: not who a person is, but what they look like to everyone else.

The full birth chart these divisions are cut from is at Free Kundli, and the Vimshottari periods they are read alongside are at Year Ahead.

Worked Raj Yoga Interpretation - 12 April 1990, 10:30, New Delhi

Computed for 12 April 1990, 10:30, New Delhi, from a Gemini ascendant. 6 combinations were tested and 2 were found: ViparitagajaYoga, UbhayachariYoga. Absent combinations are listed too, so that you can tell a chart with none from a check that ran incompletely.

A Raja Yoga is a specific structural fact about a chart: a lord of an angle and a lord of a trine brought together. This page checks that fact and four related ones, tells you which formed and which did not, and then tells you what the result does not entitle anybody to claim.

  • Every combination reported present or absent, never only the hits
  • The classical rule each check applied is printed with the result
  • Birth details are used for this result and never stored

What the Raj Yoga Means in a Kundli

Parashara defines the Raja Yoga in terms of house rulership rather than of any particular planet. The kendras — the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses — are the pillars of a chart, and the trikonas — the 1st, 5th and 9th — are its sources of fortune and merit. When a lord of one is joined to a lord of the other, the two categories of strength are linked, and that link is what the texts call a Raja Yoga.

The word raja means king, and the classical results are stated in the vocabulary of a court: rank, authority, the favour of rulers. That vocabulary is the single largest source of nonsense written about this yoga. What the structure actually describes is a chart in which the stable houses and the fortunate houses reinforce each other, which is a real feature and not a promise of a throne.

This page checks the conjunction form — a kendra lord and a trikona lord occupying the same house — because that is what the engine detects, and reports the count as strength. Aspect-based Raja Yogas, exchange-based ones, and the many named variants in the later literature are not claimed here, because claiming a check the engine does not perform is the one thing a calculator must never do.

Combinations Checked Alongside the Raj Yoga

Yogakaraka

For six ascendants — Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius — a single planet rules both a kendra and a trikona and is therefore a Raja Yoga in one body. Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. The other six ascendants have no Yogakaraka at all, and a chart is not weaker for it.

Viparita Raja Yoga

The lords of the difficult houses — 6th, 8th and 12th — placed in difficult houses. The classical reading is that affliction turned on itself produces an unexpected rise, which is why the name means the reversed Raja Yoga. The engine requires at least two such lords before reporting it.

Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga

A debilitated planet whose debilitation is cancelled — by its dispositor in an angle, by the lord of its exaltation sign in an angle, or by the debilitation lord being itself exalted. It has its own page and is included here because it is the variant most often confused with the main yoga.

Amala Yoga

A benefic in the tenth from the Moon, read for a reputation that survives scrutiny. Not a Raja Yoga strictly, but it belongs to the same family of status readings and is checked here for that reason.

Ubhayachari Yoga

Benefics flanking the Sun in the 2nd and 12th from it. One of the solar yogas, read in the same court vocabulary and subject to the same caution about it.

House Lords Behind the Raj Yoga Check

The combinations above were tested against a Gemini ascendant, and that single fact decides every one of them. A yoga defined by the second and eleventh lords is a statement about two specific planets, and which two depends entirely on which sign was rising. Change the ascendant and you change the lords, the categories they belong to, and therefore the answer.

The categories are the vocabulary the whole yoga literature is written in. Kendras — the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — are the pillars: the houses that hold a chart up. Trikonas — the 1st, 5th and 9th — are the sources of fortune and merit. A Raja Yoga is a link between a lord of one group and a lord of the other, and that is the whole definition. Dusthanas — the 6th, 8th and 12th — are the houses of difficulty, and a lord of a dusthana placed in another dusthana is the Viparita reversal. Upachayas — the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th — are the houses that improve with time, which is why malefics there are read differently from malefics anywhere else.

The first house belongs to two categories at once, being both a kendra and a trikona, and that is not a bookkeeping accident: it is why the ascendant lord is the single most important planet in a Parashari reading, and why a yoga involving it carries more weight than the same structure built from any other pair.

The occupants column is there because a house lord and a house occupant are different things and are constantly confused. A planet sitting in the tenth house is not the tenth lord unless it also rules the sign there. Most yoga definitions are about lords; a few — Budha-Aditya, Chandra-Mangal, the Mahapurusha set — are about occupants. The table gives you both so a definition can be checked rather than taken on trust.

How to Read a Raj Yoga Result

  1. Read the yoga as a structure, not a result Ask which two lords are involved and which houses they rule before asking what the combination is supposed to deliver. A 9th-and-10th link and a 4th-and-5th link are both Raja Yogas and describe entirely different things.
  2. Check the strength of the participating planets A Raja Yoga formed by two debilitated planets in the twelfth house is still a Raja Yoga by definition and is not the same as one formed by two dignified planets in an angle. The combination is a structure; the planets are what fills it.
  3. Look at the house the yoga sits in Where the two lords meet is where the linkage operates. In a kendra or trikona it is structural and visible; in a dusthana it is applied to difficulty, service or things that stay out of sight.
  4. Check the Navamsa before believing it A yoga strong in the birth chart and dissolved in the D9 is the classical picture of a structure that does not hold. This is the single most useful cross-check on any yoga claim and the one almost no calculator performs.
  5. Bring in the Dasha for anything resembling timing A natal yoga is a standing feature and has no dates in it. The tradition holds that a yoga expresses during the periods of the planets that form it, which is a Vimshottari question and not a chart-reading one.

Detection Method Behind the Raj Yoga Result

Every combination reported above is produced by a named detector in this site's astrology engine, not by a language model and not by a lookup table of pre-written paragraphs. A detector takes the planet-to-house map, the planet-to-sign map and the ascendant, applies one classical condition, and returns three things: whether the condition held, a strength between zero and one, and the rule it applied. All three are printed.

Strength is not a score. It reflects how firmly that detector's own condition was met — how many qualifying conjunctions were found, how many of the three benefics participated, how many debilitations were cancelled. It is calibrated per detector and is not a common currency, so adding the column up produces a number that means nothing. It exists so that a marginal case can be told from an emphatic one, and for no other purpose.

Absent combinations are printed. A calculator that lists only what it found leaves a reader unable to distinguish a chart with no yogas from a check that ran incompletely, and the omission always flatters. Every page here reports the number tested alongside the number found, and both numbers come from the same list.

What is not checked is named rather than hidden. This engine has no detector for Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga — the ninth and tenth lords in conjunction or mutual aspect — so no page here claims to test it. It has none for Kaal Sarp Dosha either. Both are well-known enough that their absence looks like an oversight, which is precisely why it is stated: a row that silently reports 'not present' for a condition nothing evaluated is a lie a reader cannot detect.

The Pancha Mahapurusha set is assembled in exactly one place in the engine. It used to be detected in two modules at once, so three of the five came back twice in a single chart and Saturn's came back under two different spellings — which inflated both the count of yogas a chart carried and the scores derived from it. The count this page reports is a real count.

Birth-Time Sensitivity of a Raj Yoga Check

Almost every combination on this page is defined by house position or by house rulership, and houses are the part of a chart that moves fastest. The ascendant travels through all twelve signs every twenty-four hours — roughly one sign every two hours, and roughly one degree every four minutes — so an hour's error in a recorded birth time routinely changes the rising sign. Change the rising sign and every house lord changes with it, which changes most of the table above.

The planets themselves are far steadier. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, the Sun about every month, and Jupiter and Saturn are fixed across a whole day. So a combination defined purely by two planets sharing a sign survives a rough birth time, and one defined by houses does not. Where a result on this page depends on a house, treat it as provisional unless your birth time is recorded to the minute.

Every reading here assumes a rectified birth time. The same caution applies with more force to the divisional charts a combination should be checked against: beyond the D9 they are highly birth-time sensitive, and the D60 changes ascendant about every two minutes.

Why the Birth Place Changes the Raj Yoga

The ascendant is not a property of the instant alone. It is the point of the ecliptic rising over a particular horizon, so it is a function of the moment and of the coordinate together, and the two trade off exactly: the sky turns one degree every four minutes, and one degree of longitude is four minutes of local time. Moving one degree of longitude — about 103 km east or west at Indian latitudes — moves the ascendant a degree, and 3096 km moves it a whole sign. A different rising sign means different house lords, and every combination on this page is a statement about house lords.

Latitude matters separately and less obviously. It does not shift the clock, it changes how fast each sign climbs — the ascensional difference — so two places on the same meridian and the same instant still rise different degrees, and the gap grows the further from the equator you are. This is why a chart cast for a state capital is not a rounding of a chart cast for a village two districts away; it is a different chart that happens to look plausible.

So enter the town you were actually born in. The place search above accepts any village, town or city a geocoder knows, not a shortlist of metros, and it prints the latitude, longitude and timezone it used above the result so you can check them against a map. Since one whole sign of the ascendant is the unit this page is built from, a birth place picked for convenience damages the result in the same way and by the same mechanism as a birth time rounded to the nearest quarter hour.

Limits of the Raj Yoga

A Raja Yoga does not make anybody a king, a minister, a chief executive or rich. The classical results were written for a court society and describe a structural pattern in a chart, not an outcome in a life. The pattern is common — most charts carry at least one of the yogas checked here — and any reading that treats it as rare is selling something.

The absence of a Raja Yoga is not a finding either. Six ascendants have no Yogakaraka by construction, plenty of well-lived lives have no kendra-trikona conjunction, and a chart with none of these combinations is not defective.

Nothing here predicts a promotion, an election, a title or an income. This site does not give career or financial advice, and a structural yoga is not a back door to it.

Two limits apply to every page in this family and are worth stating in one place. Divisional charts beyond the D9 are highly birth-time sensitive, and every reading here assumes a rectified birth time. And nothing on this site is medical, legal or financial advice: a chart is a traditional interpretive framework, not a diagnosis, not a forecast, and never a reason to delay professional help.

The Raj Yoga and the Divisional Charts

A combination found in the birth chart is a first reading, not a finished one. The classical instruction is to test it against the divisional charts, and above all against the Navamsa: a yoga formed by planets that hold their dignity in the D9 is described very differently from one formed by planets that collapse there. That cross-check is the single most useful thing a reader can do with a positive result, and almost no calculator performs it.

The sixteen vargas are Parashara's Shodashavarga, and the weighting between them — Vimshopaka Bala — puts the D1, D9 and D60 highest. Every one of them is computed on this site from the classical start-sign rules rather than the cyclic shortcut that collapses the D12 and D60 into Aries. The Navamsa calculator is the one to run next after a raj yoga check; the Shashtiamsa calculator is the final dignity test, and it needs a birth time good to the minute.

Timing is a separate system again. A natal combination is a standing feature of a chart with no dates in it; when it expresses is a Vimshottari Dasha question, read from the periods of the planets that form it. Any tool that produces a date from a natal yoga has generated a sentence rather than read a chart.

Raj Yoga Calculator - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Raj Yoga in a kundli?

A structural link between a lord of an angle — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house — and a lord of a trine — the 1st, 5th or 9th. When the two are brought together, the chart's stable houses and its fortunate houses reinforce each other. That link is the yoga.

Does a Raj Yoga guarantee success?

No. The classical results were written in the vocabulary of a royal court and describe a pattern in a chart, not an outcome in a life. Most charts carry at least one of the combinations on this page, which should tell you how much weight a single one can bear.

How many Raj Yogas are there in a chart?

This page reports the number of kendra-lord-with-trikona-lord conjunctions the engine finds, plus four related combinations checked separately. Counting yogas is a poor way to judge a chart in any case: one strong linkage between well-placed planets says more than five weak ones.

Which ascendants have a Yogakaraka planet?

Six of the twelve. Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. The other six have no single planet ruling both an angle and a trine, and that is a structural fact rather than a weakness.

Do I need my exact birth time for a Raj Yoga check?

Yes, and more than for most things. Every combination on this page is defined by house rulership, and the houses rotate through the whole circle every day. An hour's error changes the ascendant, which changes every lord, which changes every yoga.

Can a Raj Yoga be cancelled?

The tradition describes conditions under which a yoga does not express — the participating planets combust, debilitated, in a dusthana, or dissolved in the Navamsa. This page reports the structure and its strength rather than issuing a verdict on expression, because a verdict of that kind is a judgement and not a calculation.
